Why does my dog still have a lump under his eye after treatment?

I have been following your direction with Kane after finding a vet by the name of Dr Pacy. He has been treating him for several months. The eye issue was not conjunctivitis as I feared. It was an infection that was resistant to the first antibiotic but when put on Cipro the infection cleared up. However the nasal discharge has stopped but Kane still has a big ball under his left eye. Dr Pacy just put him back on Cipro. He said if I didn't have financial problems he would've used a specialist.

Since we can't look up your previous posts, I don't have all of the information. Is it possible that this new bump is related to a tooth root abscess? I would recommend that you have Kane rechecked with Dr. Pacy and ask about this possibility. If it is an abscessed tooth, it will usually go down with antibiotics but go back up as soon as the antibiotics are finished. The tooth needs to be removed to help heal the abscess. If it isn't an abscess, then it could be a mass that would need a biopsy to diagnose. I am not sure that the lump in your picture is directly related to the eye, since it is quite a distance away, but without being able to examine Kane and his medical history, I cannot be certain.

    Hello. Poor Sugar! This is either an infection/abscess, or a tumor. Without some diagnostics it is impossible to say from just a picture. If you have any ability to have her examined by a veterinarian I encourage you to do so. Otherwise, it might be best to find a rescue group that can help her. I do hope she is OK & thank you so much for trying to help.

    Poor Toto! He needs to see the veterinarian today! It's possible this is a skin infection or an abscess. Dogs can have tooth root abscesses that show up under the eye as well. All these conditions require treatment as well as external care of the wound. He also needs to wear an elizabethan collar to protect the area from scratching. I hope he starts feeling better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I recommend you have Ozzie evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

Hello. Just based on where the lump is located, I would suspect that Rialy has an infected tooth root. The 4th premolar is a common cause of infections that will pop out just under the eye. You can keep the area clean with a little peroxide, but you will need to see your vet on Monday to confirm this. If it is an abscessed tooth, Rialy will be put on antibiotics & probably scheduled for a dental procedure to clean & possibly remove the tooth. He will be fine afterwards. I'm glad to hear that you are having a dental and having the extraction performed, this is exactly what she needs. The vet should know to take care of the abscess while they are treating Khloe, but it wouldn't hurt to mention it just in case. She will probably sent home with antibiotics and hopefully a pain medication for the next few days while the infection clears up.

It should resolve with the treatment described. If not, recheck with your veterinarian. If it is an abscess, it may need to be lanced and drained. You should also confirm the entire tooth and roots has been removed. A bit of tooth root left behind may cause infection.

I am sorry to hear that! It may be that the infection is still going on - you may need a longer course of the antibiotic or perhaps a different one. I would recommend having them expressed again to see if there is still debris present. I would also want to double check and make sure there is not a mass present in the area:( You can ask for a biopsy to be done if the lump seems unrelated to the infection. I hope this helps and that it is nothing more than a persistent infection!
