My dog has a lump near his bottom. Is it a cyst, tumor, or hemorrhoid?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | 4 years old | 96 lbs

I just took my dog dog to the vet for this discovery. Not sure if it’s a perianal cyst, tumor or what? At first I thought a hemorrhoid. Supposed to get excised next week. Any opinions as to what it is and treatment. Any help is welcome. Thank you!

Unfortunately without seeing Remington in person, I can't say for certain what is causing this lump. It could be a cyst or a tumor, and you did absolutely the right thing by taking him into the vet. I think surgical excision is likely the best option in this case, the vet can submit to the laboratory to have it diagnosed. Once it's diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment plans based on this diagnosis. Good luck!

Depending on how it feels it could be a fluid filled cyst or if it’s solid then it’s more likely a mass. This is large and could get injured causing bleeding so I recommend a veterinary exam to see what it is and get treatment. Cysts can be drained easily, although they often will fill back up. Poor Dank. If it has popped in the past, it is possible it could be a sebaceous cyst or a malignant tumor. If it is currently bleeding or bothering him, you can try putting neosporin on any open wounds. I would also either put a cone collar on him if he can lick it as licking will only make it worse. Finally, since it is growing, I would try to get it examined as soon as you are able to see whether it needs to be surgically removed. I hope this helps.

It is hard to tell for sure by the pictures, but my suspicion would be that it is either a perianal tumor that has bled, or potentially a ruptured anal sac abscess. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. If it is an abscess then antibiotics will likely be needed. My dog has a large, growing lump. Should I take him to the vet?

This could be a seroma from an injury, a cyst, abscess or a tumor. Cysts and abscesses need to be drained by a vet. If your vet suspects a tumor, he will do a fine needle aspirate to determine whether it is a harmless lipoma, which does not need to be removed unless it is ulcerating or bothers the dog due to its location or size, or another tumor that needs to be removed. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam of the mass.

My dog has a big red bump on his butt. What are the possible causes?

This could be a severely abscessed anal gland/sac or a tumor or a perineal hernia. This can only be diagnosed with a hands-on exam. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a hernia may have to be fixed surgically. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

My dog has a red lump or blister near his anus. Is it serious?

It's a little difficult to tell from your picture alone - being able to examine and touch a lump in person makes it much easier to determine what it is. This could be a skin tumor, a small abscess or inflammatory nodule, or a lesion from something like contact hypersensitivity. I would recommend having this lump examined by your veterinarian since it looks red and possibly like there is discharge. If he is licking or chewing at the lump you should put an e-collar on him until you can see a veterinarian. They may know what it is after being able to examine it or may recommend taking an aspirate sample using a small needle to look for cells under the microscope.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. Based on the location, often times these tumors are benign in nature and are known as perianal adenomas though about 10% are malignant and again it could be really any other tumor type. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Why does my dog have a sudden, hard, large lump near her tail?

This lump could be a cyst, an abscess, a lipoma, or a growth. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. Can a large, growing lump on my dog's rear be surgically removed?

Yes, typically lumps can be removed. Given that it has gotten bigger on Casino, it would be best to have the lump diagnosed and removed. It could be a cyst, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. I would take Casino into he vet tomorrow if possible.
