My 9-month-old pit makes loud inhaling noises after eating. Is it serious?

If he is like most young pitties I know, he is probably a maniac. Maybe he banged his throat on something or overdid himself when he was pulling / playing. I have three myself and they have a knack for throwing themselves into things very hard. If this isn't the case most likely, than there is potentially some inflammatory, infectious, or allergic process causing Gronk to act out of the norm. Since he is currently stable and not in any direct distress, you might consider scheduling him a regular veterinary visit. If matters do not change or improve by the time that visit rolls around, take him in for a check up. If they are improving or gone before than, cancel it. Obviously if matters are worsening or have reached a point that are unacceptable to you, you should have him seen on an emergency basis through your local ER clinic. Hope this makes sense.

Of course there are other, worrisome things that it could be too, including heart disease, pneumonia. or other infection. However, theses dogs usually are not playful and excited for exercise. Same for the picky eating- it could be totally normal for him or it could be a sign of infection or other problem. Hopefully it's nothing but anytime you notice a change in the breathing character, you should pay attention. I advise to make an appointment with your veterinarian who will listen to her heart and lungs as well as check her throat for any abnormalities. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the wheezing noise is new then I would have Cherry examined. It could be a upper respiratory infection or kennel cough. If Cherry is overweight then that can affect the loudness of her breathing as well. If this has been going on for a while, Cherry could have an overlong soft palate or everted saccules that just vibrate when she is sleeping and snoring. Some breeds will naturally have louder breath sounds or what is called respiratory stridor. This can be due to narrow airway, smaller nares, extra tissue such as soft palate. If Pumkin has just recently started to make noise breathing and he wasn’t before, then this could be indicative of a problem. Inflammation, infection or nasal mass or foreign body could cause this. If he is making some abnormal breathing sounds, it is possible that he could have aspirated (breathed some of the fluid into his lungs). This can lead to aspiration pneumonia, which can make dogs very sick. He may have some inflammation of his esophagus or his palate that is causing him to make a snorting noise, or he could even have something that is partially obstructing his airway. I would monitor Patton closely for any changes in behavior such as excessive lethargy or anorexia, or continued vomiting or diarrhea. Also watch for changes to his breathing effort - if he appears to be using his belly to help him breathe, this could be a sign of lung disease such as pneumonia and he should be seen by a veterinarian right away. If his snorting noise does not resolve on it's own over the next 24-48 hours, or if he develops any other clinical signs, I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian. They may recommend bloodwork and/or x-rays to look for evidence of lung disease. I hope this is helpful!

Abnormal breathing sounds can be a sign of many conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among many other possibilities. Given his breed, this can also be brachycehalic syndrome though that typically presents in a different way. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork.
