My dog has loose stool after switching food. Should I fast or switch back?

As long as the stool was normal or close to normal, you can begin the transition back to the regular diet. Ideally, it should take 7-10 days to transition back. See how Teddy does tomorrow. If the stool is getting looser or more bloody, go back to a bland diet until it isn't, then restart the transition. Call your vet also and let him or her know that Teddy has loose/bloody stool again. A recheck may be recommended.

Switching foods too quickly can cause digestive upset such as vomiting and diarrhea. It would be best to return to Oli's original food until his stomach settles and then start a gradual change to the new food over a period of 7-9 days, slowly adding in more of the new food over time. This can help minimize stomach upset from the new food as he adjusts.

Dexter could have diarrhea for many reasons. It is possible that it is related to the new food. To see if this is the cause, over about a weeks time, transition him back to his old food. If the diarrhea goes away then you know that was the cause. If it continues, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian and checked for common things like parasites and bacteria overgrowth. Typically if you give your pet probiotics this will help with the diarrhea. I would recommend giving Culturelle over the counter to the food daily and hopefully this is enough to get things back to normal. However some pets will have severe bacteria dysbiosis (imbalance) which requires an additional antibiotic to get things to clear up completely. Typically I prescribe Metronidazole and this does great to get pets back to normal fast.

Yes, you should have transitioned her slowly over a few days from the rice and chicken to the new food. So start all over again: Fast Meisha again for 12 hours, then feed bland food such as boiled rice with boiled boneless white chicken meat in small quantities over several feeds a day,. Do this for a day, then start replacing small quantities of rice with her Blackhawk food over the next two days until she is at the normal quantity of her regular food. If the diarrhea does not go away by the end of the third day, or your Meisha is lethargic and dehydrated,you will need to take her to a veterinarian for an exam.

It may take another two to three days. If it is severe and she’s lethargic then please take her in for treatment. Many dogs have sensitive stomachs and the canned food is too rich for them. There are special bland diets to help resolve the diarrhea, or you can feed boiled chicken and rice which should help also. Hello. It never hurts to do a small fast to help settle the stomach. 12 hours should be fine & then re-introduce food slowly, maybe 1/3 of the ration followed several hours later by another 1/3 & remainder in the evening.
