My GSD puppy is limping, leg swollen, not eating. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 11 days old | 80 lbs

Our German shepherd started limping on Thursday night . He is 10 months old, approx. 80 pounds. The limping and condition have gotten a bit worse since then , he holds his back left leg up at all times, and using only his other three legs. He has lost his appetite, barely barks, lays down for the most part. I wrapped his back left leg with a bandage and rubbed some ointment on Friday and Saturday. We removed the bandage yesterday (Saturday), that’s when we noticed that his limb was swillen

Poor Damon! The limo definitely looks swollen but without me examining him I cannot say WHY it is swollen and why he is limping. He could have a soft tissue injury like a sprain or torn ligament or he could have a fractured bone somewhere or even an infection. Since it has been going on for a few days and has only gotten worse and he isn’t eating then I would have your vet or local emergency vet look at him soon. they will be able to help determine the cause, localize the pain, see if he has a fever and help come up with a plan to make him feel better. They will be able to do blood work and X-rays if needed. I hope this helps!
