My dog is limping with a paw boil. Does he need to see a vet?

Hello. It is very difficult to tell exactly what you are trying to show because of all the hair there. It does somewhat resemble a plantar wart, but I am afraid a hands on exam will probably necessary to truly identify what this is. You can try bandaging up the paw in essence creating a sneaker to protect the area, but do try to have this looked at in the near future in case additional treatment is necessary. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This looks to be a histiocytoma tumor which is a benign tumor commonly found on the limbs and face of dogs. It is a benign tumor that usually will regress on its own within a few weeks/months with no treatment. Of course, I am just guessing. It is impossible to diagnose these things via the internet with just a photo. Here is an information sheet about histiocytomas in dogs for you to read. The picture may be a bit misleading, but I am concerned that what we are looking at may be a mass/tumor. However, an embedded object may be the problem as well. I would really recommend that he be seen by a veterinarian. They can decide if antibiotics, or possibly surgery is needed.

It is difficult to make out exactly what this is based on the pictures, but it appears to be an ulcerated sore that has opened up on the paw pad. These could even be the result of an infection. These lesions are likely the reason why she is limping though other things like a soft tissue injury are also possible. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. It could be an infection or a mass so he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or the mass may need to be removed. Schedule an examination with your vet to have it evaluated. You could also soak his paw in a warm Epsom Salt solution and see if that help.
