My dog is limping and won't put weight on paw, no visible injury?

Since Sami can't talk, only a physical exam will be able to determine the source of the lameness. Just like people, the pain/limping can be related to many causes including a ligament tears, soft tissue injury, a developmental abnormality or even a spinal issue. You may try strict rest for a few days (no walks, running, jumping or stairs). If Sami does not improve or if he gets worse, have him examined by the veterinarian. Pets who exhibit toe touching lameness on the hing legs are a concern for a tear of the cranial cruciate ligament which is serious. He may need radiographs and the doctor will determine this based on the exam. I hope he starts feeling better quickly.

Poor Layla! If she is still limping I would make an appointment to have her seen by your vet. She may have injured her nail(s) as you described, or she may even have some soft tissue swelling/ irritation or a fracture. If there is a stick/ splinter/ other foreign object in her paw the vet can help remove it and treat it to help prevent infection. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Layla without consulting with your vet. I recommend keeping her in a crate or in a room where she can't run/ jump on anything and only taking her out for very short bathroom breaks until she is no longer limping. Make sure she's on a leash so she can't run and make things worse.

If he is weight bearing and limping and not improving with rest, then I would get him seen to see if he has a foreign body or a soft tissue injury at your vet. If he is not wanting to use it at all then it needs to be seen immediately as there may be a fracture or torn ligament.

He may have stepped on something sharp or hard that pierced or bruised his pad that you can't see. If he is still limping in the morning, I recommend getting him seen by your vet to determine what happened and how best to treat it.

He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

Without more information, it would be hard to say. If you are seeing a visible wound on the foot, I would be concerned there is an infection from yeast or bacteria that needs to be treated with medication from your vet. If he is not using the foot at all, then this would be most suspicious of a fractured bone. However, broken bones tend to be very painful and swollen. Another possibility is that he has a damaged nerve. This can make them limp and would not be painful to the touch. Either way, if he's not using the leg, then he should be evaluated and treated by a veterinarian. If he is using the leg, then it may be a torn muscle, tendon, or ligament.
