My dog's limping with knee pain. How can I ease his discomfort?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered

my dog has a lot of knee pain. we took him to a vet about 2 years ago for the same problem and I believe the vet said that he has arthritis or something like that. he's been fine and walking for most of the time but about 2-3 days ago he began limping amd unable to stand on his left back leg. what can I do to ease the pain for him?

You should let him rest and only take him out to eliminate preferably on a leash. He will need to be seen by your vet to assess the leg and why he is in pain. This could be due to arthritis, a sprain or trauma such as a cruciate ligament tear or rupture. Your vet will be able to prescribe NSAIDs suitable for dogs in order to curb inflammation and take the pain. Please take him to a vet, preferably today, before the vets close. Do not give your dog human NSAIDS such as Ibuprofen or tylenol, etc. as they are toxic to dogs.

The best you can do for now is to restrict Winston's activity. Leash him for elimination and avoid or prevent running, jumping, rough play, stairs or jumping on/off furniture.
He may need x-rays on the limb. Arthritis is a progressive condition that can never be "fixed". Other possibilities include a cruciate ligament injury or a patellar luxation. Both of these conditions typically require surgery.
Do not give Winston any OTC medications as many can be toxic to dogs. When you see the veterinarian, discuss all options including conservative care or medical management as well as surgical options (if indicated). Your vet can dispense or prescribe a safe medication for pain management.

There is a possibility that your dog tore a cruciate ligament in his knee. I would make him rest, ie only leash walk him to do his business outside, and otherwise not let him run or jump around. If the lameness is not gone tomorrow or significantly better, then I suggest you make an appointment with your vet for an exam. Your dog will need anti-inflammatory medication to reduce inflammation and pain.

Poor Kane. He could have strained a ligament or muscle causing the limping. He's been in pain for two days now and unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would take him into a vet now to get this limping diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

Dog limping after running. Can I give him ibuprofen for leg pain?

It is not recommended to give pets ibuprofen. I recommend instead to call your veterinarian. They may want to see him to make sure his cranial cruciate ligament has not been injured or that a kneecap is out of place. They can also provide pet safe pain medication. My large dog is limping, won't put weight on his swollen leg?

Do not give any medications to your dog without the advice of your veterinarian. Many OTC medications can be toxic to pets. Ideally, Ziggy should be examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary orthopedic specialist to diagnose ligament damage, arthritic conditions, fractures or tumors. X-rays of the knees and hips will likely be recommended. These can be done under anesthesia or sedation. A veterinary house all service may be an option for an exam. Afterwards, a sedative and/or pain management can be dispensed to make the trip to the clinic easier and less stressful for all parties.
