Dog limping after zoomies? How to ease pain & when to see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Aussie Doodle | Female | spayed | 4 years and 11 months old | 140 lbs

My dog sprained her ankle when she had zoomies earlier, either when she jumped off the bed or when going up the stairs too quickly. She is limping slightly and has difficulty going up the steps/hopping on furniture. How can I help her mitigate the pain? At what sign should I know to take her to the vet?

Besides resting her there isn't much you can do at home as human over the counter pain relievers can be toxic to dogs. If her signs do not improve in a couple days with rest and/or she seems more painful then she needs to be examined by your vet. Your vet can prescribe the appropriate pain reliever to alleviate her discomfort.
