My Border Collie is limping after a walk. Is it an old injury?

As she walks more, it doesn't hurt as much, making the limp go away. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!

Based on your description, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her and also have x-rays taken of her legs / hips and see if there are any developmental abnormalities. Just the other day, I had a 6 month old dog with such severe hip dysplasia, one hip was dislocated and the other was on the verge due to the severe dysplastic nature of the hip joints. Please have him assessed for fever and pain by a vet as soon as possible. I would be concerned he may have cellulitis, an infection under the skin. Xrays may be recommended to rule out bone injury also given his refusal to walk

If he was behaving normally otherwise, then watching him at home would have been recommended, but since he is lethargic as well, he really should be seen. It could be anything from a strain or pull to orthopedics injury to infection. A physical exam, xrays and a screening for tick borne diseases would be recommended. Treatment will depend on the diagnosis. In the meantime, restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination and avoid excessive running, jumping or rough play until he sees the doctor.

Poor Brodie! Limping can be from injury, arthritis or other more serious problems. I would try to keep him confined and resting for a few days to see if it's better. Out for bathroom on a leash and right back in, no stairs, no running or jumping, etc. Keep him quiet. If it's not better after that, then you should see your vet for an exam and maybe xrays. This sounds suspicious of arthritis. In a younge dog this often indicates a defect in cartilage or other soft tissue. These injuries are often difficult to detect, but can be narrowed-down with an exam and possibly x-rays. Considering this has been going on for a month, it's best to have a vet evaluate him sometime soon. Once the cause of this is identified, the appropriate treatment can be recommended.
