Why does my dog limp after lying down for a month? Is it arthritis?

Poor Brodie! Limping can be from injury, arthritis or other more serious problems. I would try to keep him confined and resting for a few days to see if it's better. Out for bathroom on a leash and right back in, no stairs, no running or jumping, etc. Keep him quiet. If it's not better after that, then you should see your vet for an exam and maybe xrays. I hope he feels better soon!

It could be that Buddy is suffering from arthritis, and that's causing him to limp in pain. Arthritis is common in older dogs. I would take Buddy into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose if he is suffering from arthritis, and can give him some pain meds for it. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. I also recommend giving him glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjuction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from his symptoms.

Hi, in my opinion it sounds like Frankie could have potentially injured her cruciate ligaments. This would be a potential diagnosis provided the lameness seem to affect just one of her legs. If both legs should be affected, and she should be hopping like a bunny it could be that she is suffering with hip dysplasia. I would recommend to have Frankie rechecked. Arthritis is definitely a possibility. You could start him on a joint supplement, like Dasuquin and see if that helps. Your vet could also take an x-ray to evaluate for arthritis and then start him on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, like Deramaxx, Previcox, Rimadyl, etc. NSAIDs help relieve the discomfort associated with arthritis.

Poor Sage! Since Sage can't talk, only a physical exam will be able to determine the source of the lameness. It's also the only way to know if the nodes are related to the limping or if they are unrelated. Just like people, the pain/limping can be related to many causes including arthritis, a ligament tear, soft tissue injury or even a spinal issue. You may try strict rest for a few days (no walks, running, jumping or stairs). If Sage does not improve, have him examined by the veterinarian. He may need radiographs and the doctor will determine this based on the exam. A joint supplement for dogs and an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets may also help. I hope he starts feeling better quickly.

There are a number of possibilities including developmental joint disease, infectious arthritis such as lymes disease and nutritional imbalance. I strongly recommend a full physical exam and possibly xrays by your vet as soon as possible, they can also prescribe pain relief as appropriate

Limping can be caused by several different problems - if x-rays didn't show a fracture, then it is likely that Bentley has some type of soft-tissue injury causing him to limp. One of the most common injuries like this that we see in dogs is a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) - this is the same ligament that human athletes sometimes injure, called the ACL in humans. This ligament is responsible for stabilizing the knee joint when the dog walks, so if it is torn it causes significant lameness that does not improve with rest and pain medication. Other possible causes of limping for over a month would be a torn muscle, or a torn tendon or ligament in another part of the leg. Unfortunately, these injuries will not show up on x-rays. If your veterinarian doesn't have any other suggestions for further testing (such as a sedated orthopedic exam to check joint stability), then I would recommend asking for a referral to an orthopedic specialist. Bentley may need an MRI or other advanced imaging to diagnose the problem.
