My puppy's paw was swollen from injury. Why is he still limping?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 14 days old

My 6 month puppy got fabric wrapped around his paw and it looks like it cut off circulation for some time. It was swollen but has gone down. His paw has circulation too it now by the color but he is holding it up and sometimes it drags when he forgets it. Is there anything that needs to be done?

Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor B.

I recommend getting the foot looked at. Yes, the circulation was compromised but the nerves could also have been damaged. My hope is that with time the nerves and vessels will return to normal. If B is holding up the foot it is likely painful. The vet can prescribe pain medications to help him feel better.

Good luck!
