My dog had a growth removed. Why is he still limping after surgery?

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Chestnut's care today! This could be related to being under anesthesia in one position which can result in pain in patients with arthritis for example. I think other possibilities for lameness should be considered. Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

It could be that this lump on his front leg is a cyst, but if it's preventing him from running and going on long walks without limping, it should be removed surgically. I would speak to the vet about possibly doing this for the lump. As for the new lump, that should be examined by a vet as well and a sample of the fluid should be examined to see if it is a cyst, benign tumor, or malignant tumor. If it's a cyst, then it can be removed as well surgically.

Limping is a sign of pain in dogs, so yes Allegra is in pain if she is limping. I would recommend having a bone biopsy done. There is a possibility that she is suffering from an osteosarcoma (bone cancer), and a biopsy is a logical next step. Dogs are very good at hiding pain and oftentimes don't show how painful they truly are until much further along in their illness. I do recommend having this bone biopsy done.

This lump looks like it could be a cyst or other skin growth or tumor, and I doubt it is related to the limping. The limping more likely would be related to arthritis, previous trauma or other joint disease. I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian. They can examine the lump and may recommend taking a sample using a small needle to determine what it is. They can also examine Moose's leg and may recommend taking x-rays.

You should definitely give him some time off. Usually 7 days is recommended. Even though the incision is not in a high motion area ( like over a joint) the walking will delay healing by causing separation of the wound edges. Great question! Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Toby may need x-rays to diagnose what is going on with his foot. That is a very odd lump. If he had fractures to the small bones in this region, then they may have healed improperly and caused the lump you see. It is also possible that there is on-going inflammation in that area that could benefit from medications. There is also a small possibility of a tumor in that area. Your vet should be able to figure out what is going on. If it is not cancerous, there are several treatments you could try before going to surgery, including anti-inflammatory medications, glucosamine supplements, Adequan injections, acupuncture, or physical therapy. But first, we need to figure out what is the exact process of the injury so that the appropriate treatment can be started.
