My dog has lumps on joints, vet said clear, but he's limping. Help!

Pet's info: Dog | Japanese Spitz | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

hi we have a Japanese spitz 6 years old. Found a lump on his right shoulder at the joint, out vet took a sample of fluid from the lump (roughly an inch in diameter) and all tests came back clear. The lump is still there we were told it was nothing to worry about. The dog can't run / go on long walks without limping now. Today I found another lump slightly bigger on his back left leg - in the joint where the leg meets the body. Same consistency as the one on the front shoulder. Any ideas? Thanks

It could be that this lump on his front leg is a cyst, but if it's preventing him from running and going on long walks without limping, it should be removed surgically. I would speak to the vet about possibly doing this for the lump. As for the new lump, that should be examined by a vet as well and a sample of the fluid should be examined to see if it is a cyst, benign tumor, or malignant tumor. If it's a cyst, then it can be removed as well surgically.

The limping more likely would be related to arthritis, previous trauma or other joint disease. I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian. My dog has a movable lump on her leg, limping, and won't bear weight.

This appears to be swelling in the knee joint. What we would consider the "ankle" is much lower in the leg. There can be a pocket of joint fluid on the inside of the leg. It is possible this is a skin lump at the exact spot of this fluid pocket, but I doubt it. I suspect she is not putting weight on the leg because she injured the knee, and now as the swelling increases it is becoming more and more painful. I recommend she be seen by a veterinarian to check the stability of the knee to determine if she ruptured her crainial cruciate ligament or CCL (which is like a human's ACL).

My dog has a growing lump and a limp. Does it require surgery?

Diamond needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. This could be a cyst, an abscess or a necrotic tumor. It looks like it could be infected whatever the cause. If it is a cyst or tumor, it will need to be removed. If it is an abscess, it will need a drain. It probably does hurt. She needs an exam, possible diagnostics, medications to address and infection (if present) and pain. She also needs an elizabethan collar so she cannot lick the area. I hope they figure out the cause quickly.

What's this solid, unattached lump on my dog's leg near his knee?

I would have this lump on Jake examined by a vet. It could be a cyst, a benign tumor, or potentially a malignant tumor. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I'd recommend having Jake seen by a vet tomorrow to have the lump examined and diagnose so it can be treated as needed.

Considering the mass just appeared and she's also lame, I would suspect that it's a fluid swelling due to an injury. It would be best to have her seen by a vet sometime in the next day or two in order to diagnose the specific condition and provide the necessary treatment. For now, you can ice the affected are 2-3 times a day until you are able to see the vet. I hope that helps and Coco gets better soon.

My dog has a lumpy, growing mass on his leg. What could it be?

Without a physical exam or diagnostics, it is difficult to determine if this is something to worry over. Ideally, a fine needle aspirate or biopsy should be done to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. X-rays of the limb may be recommended to rule out bony involvement. Since you state it is growing, it should be removed before it becomes too large. As it is, that is a difficult area to close after a mass removal.
