My dog is whining, licking her vagina, and in pain: UTI or vaginitis?

It sounds like Honey is in pain or has an infection. Since she is licking her vulva frequently and walking stiffly there is a possibility that she is suffering from a urinary tract infection or, especially since she was not spayed, a uterine infection, which is potentially life threatening. Please take her to your vet for an exam as a urinary tract infection can potentially turn into a serious kidney infection , and a uterine infection is potentially fatal. A UTI is usually treated with a course of antibiotics, and a uterine infection is usually treated by surgery, ie the pus-filled uterus and ovaries are removed and your dog will also be prescribed pain medicine and antibiotics.

Hello. It is very possible that Bijou has a UTI, but she may also have a case of vaginitis. The UTI may require antibiotics, but the vaginitis may be treatable with a topical cream. Horrible odors are usually caused by bacterial infections. So when Macie licks her vulva, she is massaging secretions out which should be odorless. It appears she has a bacterial infection since there is a smell. She could be suffering from a vaginal infection or a UTI, Peeing in the house and straining are cardinal signs of a UTI.I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam. Bring fresh urine (you can catch it with a kitchen ladle) or do not take her out to pee before you go to the vet, as the vet will need urine to examine. Wilma will need to be checked out by a vet in the morning. If she does have a urinary infection, a vet can diagnose it and prescribe medication to treat it. Tonight, feed her canned food and add water to it to flush her bladder. I hope this helps.

Licking and biting excessively at the vulva is often a sign of a urinary tract infection, vaginitis, or certain types of allergies. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do at home to treat any of these problems effectively, so I would recommend taking her to the vet tomorrow for an exam if possible - she will probably need prescription antibiotics or other medication to treat the problem.

Poor girl. The brown staining is saliva staining from her licking. THe vulva also looks to be a bit swollen, likely b/c it is irritated. I would suspect that Aira has some vaginitis here. Visit you vet and they can prescribe some antibiotics to hopefully clear this up. Also if she is peeing more than normal and drinking more water, a urinalysis is warranted to check for a UTI. Until you can get her seen, you can wipe her vaginal area with baby wipes to help remove some of the debris and soothe some of the irritation. The question is, is it an vaginal infection or a uterine infection? if she is lethargic, drinking a lot, seems bloated and in pain then it is most likely a pyometra (uterine infection), this will require urgent surgery to have the uterus removed as medical treatment fail to resolve this condition in the vast majority of cases. if she is suffering from a vaginal infection this can be treated with antibiotics prescribed by your vet. either way you will have to take her to a veterinarian ASAP.
