My dog keeps licking his private parts & has red marks. What's wrong?

Causes of licking the prepuce/penis area could be a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, or trauma to the area. It is important that you make an appointment to have Mako seen by your veterinarian as soon as you can to help determine the cause of his behaviour and to start treatment. If you notice him straining to urinate/unable to produce urine, this is a medical emergency and he should be seen by a vet immediately. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buster. He should be evaluated by his veterinarian for this issue. The rubbing and licking indicate that he is uncomfortable in the region. He could have foreign material stuck in his prepuce. I had a patient that continually humped his bed and had pieces of blanket in his prepuce. He could also have a mass on his penis. In the meantime, you can try to get his penis back into his prepuce. If this is not possible, then you can apply lubrication such as KY jelly to the penis. This will prevent the exteriorized portion from drying out. I hope this information helps!

The first thing you need to do is put a cone collar on him to keep him from continuing to lick the skin. He has scrotal dermatitis (an infection of the scrotal skin) and no matter what you use to treat It with, if he just continues to lick, it will not get better. So, get the cone collar ASAP and then apply this Vetericyn spray (linked below) to the affected area 2-3 times per day. If after about 5=7 days of doing this, it is not better than you need to have him checked by your vet. It would a good idea to put an Ecollar on Otis to keep him from licking the area, as that will make it worse. Oatmeals baths or an Epsom salt bath may help as well. He could have an allergic reaction causing the redness or he could have a bacterial or fungal infection. It would be a good idea to have him checked out by the vet over the weekend, as there may be medications needed to help treat the redness. I would see if you can get him into the vet this weekend; if not, I would take him in on Monday if the redness is still present. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for your post! From the pictures you posted, it looks like Chico may have a hot spot (moist dermatitis) area in front of his prepuce / penis. Some of the area appears to be yellow and this might indicate it is infected. I would get your vet to check this out so that Chico can receive the appropriate treatment. Most likely he will need an oral antibiotic and some topical ointments to treat the area. If he is constantly licking the area, I would get a plastic cone to keep around his head to prevent him from licking the area and making it worse. I hope this helps! Red’s anus does look irritated and I can see some redness on the underside of his tail as well. He might be licking due to irritation from full anal glands, parasites or allergies. I would recommend having your vet examine him and check his anal glands. They may want to check a stool sample as well. Oral or topical medications might help. I would recommend putting an e-collar on to prevent licking until you can get to the vet.

Winston's prepuce does look quite irritated. If he has been mounting or humping it could be that he has caused some irritation, and if he is able to lick the area it could get worse. I would recommend putting an e-collar on him and you should try to prevent him from rubbing or humping anything. It looks like the tip of his penis is visible in the picture as well - if the penis continues to be visible, particularly if more of it becomes visible (called paraphimosis) you should see a veterinarian right away as exposure to air can cause damage to the delicate tissue pretty quickly. If he doesn't seem more comfortable by tomorrow morning or is having any difficulty urinating I'd recommend seeing your vet as well.
