My dog keeps biting his private area. Why is it red and chapped?

Hello there and thank you for posting your picture and concern about Choppies! From the picture you sent, it looks like Choppies has caused quite a bit of irritation and inflammation on his scrotum. I would pick up a plastic cone from the pet store to put around his head so that he is not able to lick this and then get him in to see your veterinarian for an examination. There are multiple possible causes of this, which include thermal burn, inflammation of structures inside the scrotum causing Choppies to lick due to the discomfort, infection or behavioral. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This looks to be a mild skin infection. Why it happened, we almost never know for sure. It could be from an insect bite but again, no way to know for sure. It does not look serious. I suggest you buy these medicated pads (linked below) and use them twice a day on the affected area. If after about 7-10 days it does not look better then you should have Maxwell examined by your veterinarian. That appears to be moist dermatitis. Rukas really needs to see a vet for this condition. He also has some dermatitis in the groin area that I can see in the picture. Since the sores next to the penis are open and weeping he will likely need oral antibiotics to get that to clear up. While you are waiting to get him an appointment at your vet you can apply a thin layer of Neosporin to them 2-3 times per day but he will likely just lick it off. It would a good idea to put an Ecollar on Otis to keep him from licking the area, as that will make it worse. Oatmeals baths or an Epsom salt bath may help as well. He could have an allergic reaction causing the redness or he could have a bacterial or fungal infection. It would be a good idea to have him checked out by the vet over the weekend, as there may be medications needed to help treat the redness. I would see if you can get him into the vet this weekend; if not, I would take him in on Monday if the redness is still present. I hope this helps!

One spot of redness is nothing to be concerned about. It could be a simple bug bite or mild skin infection that should resolve on its own in a few days. As long as the redness does not spread, worsen or cause discomfort, then it should be fine to just monitor this area for now. Ouch! Poor Dylan! This looks like a little local infection that he has been licking. I would place an e-collar I him to prevent licking. You can clean it with mild soap and water. And I would also put some neosporin on it twice a day. If it is not improving in the next day or two then I would definitely take him in to see your veterinarian for an exam. Your vet will be able to prescribe some oral anabiotics and some stronger topical medicine if needed. If at any point he is not eating or is lethargic then I would also take him to your vet. If Tomy sat in something irritating, it may have lead to him licking and chewing at his scrotum. I would recommend getting a plastic cone and placing this around his head and using an ointment such as Sentry Wound Cream which can be found online or at your local PetCo.
