Why is my Maltese licking paws and vomiting after rabies vaccine?

Any time I have administered a vaccination and the animal then begins vomiting or exhibiting any other abnormal symptoms, I treat as a potential adverse vaccination reaction. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the vaccination to have him examined and treated for a potential vaccination reaction. This may have nothing to do with the vaccination but it would be best to have him examined and go from there. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Hello there! I'm sorry Max isn't himself tonight. It is normal that a dog can be lethargic after receiving their vaccines, and you could even see a decrease in appetite. I would be concerned if he was experiencing persistent vomiting and diarrhea, itchy skin or hives, swelling around the muzzle, face, or eyes, severe coughing, difficulty breathing, or collapse. Should you see any off those signs, I would rush him into a vet immediately. The side effects of the vaccines should pass within 24-48 hours, but if he still isn't himself after that time, it would be a good idea to have him seen by a vet. Given that he has a heart murmur, that could also be a cause of him not acting normally, and that should be evaluated by a vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Oh no. Poor guy. It looks like he is having a superficial pyoderma ("hot spot") reaction to his skin following the injection, and maybe even a bit of cellulitis. You will need to unfortunately take Lucky back to the vet to get this treated with oral antibiotics, and also oral pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication. The topicals aren't going to be enough to help this resolve. You can clean the area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to keep it clean. You should definitely also keep the e-collar on him until this has resolved or at least until it is no longer bothering him. I am sorry your fur baby had such a bad reaction and hope that this can be avoided in the future. Best wishes and take care!

If she vomited 6 times last night than you need to call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to see your dog again today for a recheck. She might need subcutaneous fluids again and/or an anti-vomiting medications. Hope our dog feels better soon!

Chief may be having a vaccine reaction or may just be having pain from the vaccine. I recommend to call your veterinarian and let them know what is happening. They may ask to see him again or they may have you give him an antihistamine. I hope he feels better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It is certainly possible that he is having a vaccine reaction. If tomorrow morning he isn’t back to normal then I would call for a follow appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. They many need to give him some medication for nausea. Also, they will want to document the possible reaction so that next time he needs vaccinations he can be given medication ahead of time to prevent a reaction. I actually don’t think it is probably related to either event, as the vaccine if it affected him should have happened several days ago. I would recommend monitoring him closely and if he vomits again he should be seen by your veterinarian soon. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
