My dog is licking his paw. Why is his nail bloody and broken?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 5 months old | 18 lbs

I've noticed that my dog is occasionally licking the backside of his paws (at least once a day) and when I took a look at his nails today, two of them (one on each front paw) were somehow reduced in size and shaped very oddly, like a razor-sharp claw. I'm not exactly sure what happened here, and if he constantly picked at his nails in order to cause this or if there might be another explanation. I can attach photos later if needed (he's currently sleeping) but one nail was slightly bloody.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While it is hard to say exactly what is going on without seeing a photo, it is possible that Devon somehow broke his nails. The blood you are seeing may be due to the quick, or the small blood vessel that runs through each nail being exposed. This is pretty painful and can be why Devon is constantly licking. I recommend getting him an E-collar or “cone” to prevent him from licking and causing further trauma and having him seen by a vet who may prescribe pain medication. I hope this helps!

Limping means he is in pain, and the fact that he bites you when you try to touch it means he's really hurt. I would take him into a vet now. The vet can sedate him, and can remove the rest of the nail safely. He will also need pain medications and antibiotics, which the vet can prescribe. I recommend taking him into a vet immediately. My dog keeps licking his paw. Is his nail split or broken? What to do?

It may be split deeply and hurt a bit or otherwise bother your dog. This is why Walt is licking it There also may be a nailbed infection. I suggest you take Walt to your veterinarian for an exam. Your vet can check the nail for a fracture, infection or injury and help so that it does not bother your dog so much or hurt. It may need to be clipped or removed to aid healing. If you have an e-collar at home, put it on Walt so he cannot lick more bacteria into it. Please schedule an exam with your vet.

My dog's paw has a fleshy lump and she keeps licking her broken nail.

Hello. It looks like she may have broken that nail and the hard “shell” of the nail is lifted off of the quick which is the pink fleshy part. This can be painful which is why she is probably licking it. It is best to have your veterinarian trim this back and maybe bandage the foot. If it is trimmed back, the nail will regrow .

Dog's nail bed cut and swollen from licking. Is a vet visit urgent?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the picture! Due to the red fur staining it is evident that Babi is licking the toe. It is also pretty swollen. The first step is to prevent the licking by using an Elizabethan collar (cone) or donut. I do think it would heal faster if you saw a Vet. There is likely a bacterial and or yeast infection of the nail bed. Having oral antibiotics and antifungals and something to stop the desire to lick will speed this process up for you both. Is my dog's exposed nail quick dangerous after breaking and licking?

Not dangerous, but it does hurt a lot. I would recommend taking Colossus to the vet tomorrow. Some types of nail damage may need oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. You will need to prevent him from licking since it will delay healing and can lead to infection. You can cover the foot with a sock or have him wear an e-collar.

My dog's broken toenail is red, meaty, and paw discolored. What to do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It looks like Kusion broke his toenail and now the pulp of the nail is exposed. This is likely painful and he is licking it a lot causing the color change of the fur around the nail. I would take him to the vet to cut away the broken part of the nail and get him antibiotics and pain meds to prevent infection and give him comfort. You can also soak the foot in epsom salt bath until you can get to the vet. Good luck and kisses to Kusion!
