Why is my dog licking and drooling after rough play, uncomfortable?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 88 lbs

My yellow lab has been licking and drooling for about an hour now. It happened after he was outside with a bit of rough play. He doesn't seem in distress but looks a bit uncomfortable

It sounds like Indiana could be a little nauseous, as drooling can be a sign of nausea. He may have played too roughly, and upset his stomach. I would rest him, and wait another hour before feeding him. Because he's already uncomfortable, i wouldn't recommend feeding him just yet because that can cause bloat. In another hour, if he seems a little more comfortable, you can give him small amounts of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice. You can feed him this a couple of times tonight, and then tomorrow slowly add back in his normal diet. Hopefully by tomorrow, he will be back to his normal self. If he's not, then I would have him seen by a vet for a health check.

It was the right thing to do to look into Jasper's mouth! You are right the excessive drooling could be due to dental problems, but it could also be due to nausea, stress, or anxiety. Since he is eating fine, drinking normally, and behaving normally, then I would not take him into a vet just yet. If the drooling continues through today, then I would take him into the vet tomorrow for an exam. It could be that he may have a dental problem, but it's far back in his mouth and may require sedation for a thorough look.

My dog is throwing up and drooling but acting normal. Is it serious?

If he has indeed produced vomit (as apposed to retching without getting anything up), and he’s drooling but playful, it’s reasonable to give him through the night and see how he is in the morning. The drooling is probably because he’s nauseous. If he seems dumpy or lethargic in the morning, or if he’s still drooling or continues vomiting or has no interest in food, you need to take him in tomorrow. I hope that’s helpful! Poor Buddy! It sounds like he may be nauseous. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he vomits in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Drooling can be a sign of nausea and this with a decreased activity level can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Rufus evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Why is my dog drooling and licking his nose like he has peanut butter?

This can be a sign of nausea or dental problems in dogs. I would have B seen by a vet in the morning, and tonight try offering him some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts to see if that helps with the nausea.
