My dog is licking and biting their paw or leg. What's wrong?

Licking and biting on the paws and legs is a classic sign of allergies so he may be suffering from an allergy. It could also be secondary to anxiety or possibly pain. The best thing would be to have your vet examine him to determine the cause and treat the problem. Once diagnosed, your vet can prescribe medications to treat.

The most likely cause would be a skin condition of some kind, causing her to be itchy - some common possibilities would include allergies, fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Treatment will depend on what the cause is, so I would recommend having her examined by a vet - he/she can do a simple test called a skin scrape if needed to help diagnose the problem. In the meantime, I would suggest getting her an e-collar (plastic cone) to keep her from continuing to chew at her leg and make things worse until you can get her in to see a vet.

It looks like he might have chewed a hot spot onto his foot. It may have started with a minor scratch or bug bite or allergies. That itched, he chewed it, which irritated the area, which makes it itch more, and so on. I recommend getting him seen by your vet soon to have his skin checked. After an exam and possibly some lab work, your vet will have a better idea what is going on and how best to treat it.

Dogs will sometimes chew on their paws out of boredom but it can also indicate the foot itches. Look in between the paw pads and the toes, look at the nail beds and check the fur for any thorns or other objects stuck in the fur. Constant looking on the vulva can indicate an infection in the bladder. There’s not anything you can do for that at home so Bailey needs to see the veterinarian to have her urine tested for an infection or crystals. Try to get her examined today. Constant licking on the hind legs can have many causes but fleas are very common in the area. I recommend to discuss using an oral flea preventative such as Simparica with your veterinarian. If you give her this product and the licking stops, then you know it was due to fleas. In general you can wash her in an oatmeal type dog shampoo as this can help with itching as can an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for pets. When a dog chews on a joint or a leg, there is usually either an itch, irritation or pain involved. If you are doing flea and tick prevention, you can pretty much rule out a flea problem. This is likely pointing to either joint pain or possibly an active mass irritating your dog. Unfortunately it is not possible to see a lot on the photo, other than that your dog has been chewing on his leg for a while. I suggest you make an appointment with your vet for an exam. He will likely want to shave the area so he can examine the skin properly and palpate the bone and other structures. depending on the findings, he may also want to do an xray to see if there is bone or joint involvement.

Check the leg and foot for any injuries, stickers in the paw, broken nails, swellings, etc. If you notice anything then get her to a vet for an exam. If no injuries are found then wash her off in case she came into contact with a chemical that is causing a reaction and rest her. If no improvement then take her to a vet for an exam.
