My puppy licked Sulfodene ointment from a mosquito bite. Is it safe?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Ingesting a bit of the antibiotic cream may cause some temporary upset tummy symptoms (diarrhea or vomiting). If you notice this, try taking away his food for 8 hours, and then start offering small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. If Snowy becomes lethargic or disinterested in food, I would recommend taking him to the vet in case he needs further medical attention. In the future, when applying the cream, try to keep Snowy occupied with toys and play for about 10 minutes before letting him lick his skin. Hi there. First make sure Ralphue is on appropriate flea preventative, as many flea bite allergies will present like this. An allergic reaction to the spray is also possible-as if is a new substance that has been introduced to his body. Benadryl is usually considered safe for itching of this nature and a dosage can be gotten from your veterinarian if you call (we cannot legally give you a dosage because of the nature of our company, and having not seen your pet in person). If he continues to bite and scratch the area I'd suggest an e collar or cone until the area is well again. Hope this helps!

The amount of steroid shouldn't be harmful to Sky. Use caution with the chloramphenicol though. It can cause bone marrow suppression in some dogs and aplastic anemia in some people. A safer option would be to use a shirt or recovery wear for pets. A bitter agent, such as Bitter Apple Spray or Fooey!, can be used around the site to deter licking.

It would not be good for him to be licking this. I recommend using an e collar or muzzle and taking him for a walk on the leash whilst it is on. In general, we do not want dogs to lick the ingredients in the topical flea products. Therefore, most products will contain a "bittering agent" which makes the liquid taste bad, so the dogs will not lick it. If they lick a small amount, they may drool a little due to the bad taste, but they will not lick enough to cause a problem.
