My dog keeps licking his medicated shampoo. Is it safe? How to stop?

There are better ways to treat mange. I recommend to speak with your veterinarian about using a product such as Nexgard for Simparica. These are tablets that you give once a month that are labeled for fleas but will kill mice as well. It is an off label usage so your veterinarian must OK the treatment. Then you don’t have to worry about tying her up, her licking the product or anything like that. Treatment typically takes 2 to 3 months. Depending on what type of mange is present, environmental cleanup is also needed. To keep her from licking the product, make her wear an Elizabethan collar for the prescribed amount of time. The amount of steroid shouldn't be harmful to Sky. Use caution with the chloramphenicol though. It can cause bone marrow suppression in some dogs and aplastic anemia in some people. Occasionally, anti-anxiety medications may be beneficial for your pup so that he does not lick. Alternatively, redirecting the behavior to something he also likes doing (ie playing with a favorite toy, going for a walk, etc.) would help gradually decrease and resolve the behavior. Hi, you could purchase an inflatable collar for dogs that is often much more tolerated than the routine buster collars but I am not sure if it is available near you. The other option would be to get some oral medications from your vets, so something that can be given by mouth and so you would be sure he has got the right dose of medications. Hope this helps !

In general, we do not want dogs to lick the ingredients in the topical flea products. Therefore, most products will contain a "bittering agent" which makes the liquid taste bad, so the dogs will not lick it. If they lick a small amount, they may drool a little due to the bad taste, but they will not lick enough to cause a problem.
