My dog licked his paw raw. How do I stop it and treat the wound?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 55 lbs

a couple of days ago my dog started licking his foot like it was hurting and now he's licked it raw

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It is possible that Hercules caused a hotspot like area on the foot. I would recommend using a plastic cone around his head to prevent him from licking at it further. I would then recommend using an antiseptic spray such as Malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved. If there is no improvement or the skin condition worsens I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My dog keeps licking his paws raw and is now limping. What's wrong?

No matter what you use to treat him with, this will not resolve as long as he continues licking. You will need to get him an Elizabethan (cone) collar until the feet are healed. I suggest you try these medicated wipes. If no improvement after treating for 10 days or so then he needs to go back to the vet for some testing. My dog licks his paw raw, causing open sores. What is it and how to help?

Based on the picture it could either be something called acral lick granuloma it it could be some sort of tumor. Acral lick granulomas are deep infections that usually require oral antiantibiotics and sometimes steroids and you have to break the lick cycle. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Once there is a diagnosis you can make a treatment plan. My puppy licked his paw raw. How can I comfort him and stop licking?

Hi there. Poor coco. Great job that you have an appointment tomorrow am. For now, I would run to petco or Wal-Mart and grab an e-collar to keep him from licking. That is the most important part. You can lightly soak the area with a warm wash cloth for comfort, and then a cooler one. There aren't any medications unfortunately that we can recommend without seeing him. My guess based on these photos is that in addition to infection, he most likely has some underlying allergies causing him to lick his feet, so definitely discuss allergies with your veterinarian tomorrow. Poor baby. I would recommend getting him an ecollar cone to keep him from licking, cleaning the area with a moist washcloth, and applying a.teiple antibiotic. I would then give your veterinarian a call tomorrow for an appointment to be checked out. Good luck

What can I put on my dog's raw, licked paw to help it heal quickly?

Poor Jesse James! This is quite irritated! I would recommend bringing him in to see his vet to be sure he doesn't need a systemic antibiotic or anti-inflammatory at this point. In the meantime, I would put an e-collar on him (cone shaped collar) and you can clean the area with a mild soap and apply an antibiotic ointment and hydrocortisone creme.

My dog's paw cut is black and raw from licking. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Black can sometimes be associated with necrotic or dead tissue. I highly recommend that you have your veterinarian take a look at the wound to see if it requires further local therapy with debridement and cleaning. Also, they would be able to check if antibiotics should be used which is likely. In the meantime, you can consider using an e-collar which you can get at your local pet store to avoid her licking at it. Good luck!
