Is my puppy's lice contagious? How to protect my other dogs?

Lice are not a terribly pest for dogs to have unless there are many dogs grouped in small and unclean areas. If you haven't yet had Belle examined by a vet, I would recommend that she get checked out to confirm the parasite that you are seeing. Treating lice includes bathing thoroughly to remove any adult lice, and then treatment with a parasiticide. I would recommend topical treatments like Frontline or Revolution instead of dips or medicated baths. Dips and shampoos will only kill active lice and won't stay on the dog long enough to prevent further lice infestations. Frontline and Revolution are both safe in a 12 week old puppy. Lice are fairly easy to treat, so we generally don't need to treat the environment. However, nits can live for 1-2 weeks off a dog and adult lice can live for a few days, so it is possible that the dog park could be an environment for dogs to contract lice if there has been a severe infestation. Use a product such as revolution, frontline or advantage multi as they have activity against lice. Grooming is also essential so make sure that your puppy is staying clean and mat free. Lice are definitely a possibility. Usually they get this from contact with another animal. They can also be in the environment if other animals are around the house. It is impossible to rid her of the infestation by finding and killing them individually, because they lay eggs in the hair. It's best to get a product from your vet (best option) or pet store that is labeled for killing lice and fleas. These products will quickly and effectively remove the infestation. I would keep the new dog separated from your old dog as mites are contagious. The ivermectin injection should take care of the mites, however sometimes it takes two or three injections to completely eliminate mites. I would say 3 weeks are probably enough to keep them separate. The doxy will likely eliminate both the Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis within 30 days and your dog should feel much better soon. All these diseases are very hard on your dog, so sleeping is normal. He needs to rest to heal.

Hello and thank you for your question! Cat lice is species specific and will not infect you or any other species of animals you may have in your home. However, I would wash all of Chance's bedding, blankets and anything else he has come into contact with and wash all the areas he spends time in. Launder and wash what you can, but for items that can't be washed in a washing machine, you can place in a tight sealed bag for 4 weeks. All toys and other items like crates, litter boxes, and cat carriers should be disinfected. Your furniture and rugs, etc should all be washed and cleaned as well. All of these steps are necessary to prevent reinfection. However, most importantly, Chance should be on a monthly flea/tick preventative, like Fipronil or Selemectin Rx by your veterinarian each month to help kill the lice and prevent new lice from hatching.
