My puppy has lice, but is too young for a bath. What can I do?

My new puppy has lice and I don't want her to suffer what can I do? She can't take a bath yet using anti lice and other chemical stuff. What can I do? Should I wait until her 3rd month?

Lice are not a terribly pest for dogs to have unless there are many dogs grouped in small and unclean areas. If you haven't yet had Belle examined by a vet, I would recommend that she get checked out to confirm the parasite that you are seeing.

Treating lice includes bathing thoroughly to remove any adult lice, and then treatment with a parasiticide. I would recommend topical treatments like Frontline or Revolution instead of dips or medicated baths. Dips and shampoos will only kill active lice and won't stay on the dog long enough to prevent further lice infestations. Frontline and Revolution are both safe in a 12 week old puppy.

It really depends on what he has. Lice and ticks are very different things. I would recommend starting with an oral flea/tick preventive (which you'll need to get from his vet) and a good bath with general dog shampoo. Actually, given his tender age, starting with a vet visit would be best so they can treat him appropriately from the get go.

My Shih Tzu has lice and is miserable. What shampoo can help?

There are no specifically licenced shampoos for killing lice in dogs, anectodally people use dermoline shampoo for treating lice in horses. However it is expensive and not tested in dogs. Personally I would use a flea shampoo as the active ingredients will tackle live too. Another thing you could try would be frontline spray, the fipronil in it works well on lice. It is really important to treat the home as well with thorough cleaning and an insecticide spray.

My dog might have fleas or lice. How do I treat the infestation?

Poor Winnie! We have to get rid of these pesky pests once and for all. I would recommend putting Winnie on either Advantage or Revolutionti rid he lice and fleas. Make sure to continue to give the medicaiton every 2 weeks until the lice/fleas are gone. Thank you for submitting your question regarding the puppy! I would continue to keep her separate your dogs. Vacuum that room frequently and be sure to wash all bedding where she sleeps. Lice eggs are typically adhered to the hair shaft and do not fall off the dog. However, adult lice can fall off, but usually do not survive more than a few days if they leave the host. If your dogs are already on a topical flea and tick prevention, this should protect them. Treatment typically takes several applications to kill all the lice as it only works on certain life stages. My puppy is scratching and biting, found insects/eggs. Is it lice?

Lice are definitely a possibility. Usually they get this from contact with another animal. They can also be in the environment if other animals are around the house. It is impossible to rid her of the infestation by finding and killing them individually, because they lay eggs in the hair. It's best to get a product from your vet (best option) or pet store that is labeled for killing lice and fleas. These products will quickly and effectively remove the infestation. My 9-week unvaccinated puppy has fleas. Should I bathe or comb?

A bath with a flea shampoo would be good, but there are other products that are more effective and longer lasting. Since she has not received her vaccine yet, you may consider just getting a flea product from your vet when take her in for the vaccine.
