Why is my dog lethargic, yelping in pain, and won't move or jump?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

I have a 6 yr old male Lhasapoo. Four days ago he became lethargic,lost appetite and did not want to do anything but lay around. He would cry out loud if he tried to jump up on the sofa. He yelps loudly when he tries to bark.He will eat if we hand feed him and he will drink water. He is urinating and defacating but not as much as normal.I cannot afford to take him to a vet here. Please help with advice if you can.

Sounds like he may have neck pain. You need to crate rest him for 2-3 weeks meaning strict cage confinement and short leash walks only. Do not use a neck collar. Purchase a harness to go around his body. Also, do not allow him to run, jump or rough with other dogs during this period of rest. Hope he feels better soon!

Poor Smokey. He could be in pain in his hips, back, or knees causing him to be lethargic and painful when trying to jump on the couch. He does have to see a vet as soon as possible, and I will link some resources to help you afford seeing a vet. He needs to see a vet to diagnose what is causing him to be in pain, and how best to treat it. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website.

Hello, sorry to hear about Rocky. It sounds like he could have back or neck pain. Other signs may include walking very gingerly, carrying his head low, avoiding stairs and not moving onto furniture, and yelping/crying when being picked up. You should rest Rocky until he can be seen by his veterinarian. This is done by keeping him restricted in his crate, not allowing him to jump or use stairs, carrying him to go to the bathroom but then bringing him back in and do not allow him to run or play outdoors. My dog yelped, trembling, won't eat, drink, or potty. What's wrong?

Poor baby. It sounds like he may have injured something. It is common for them to injure their back or neck and act this way. I would have your vet look st him today. Your vet will be able to localize the pain and give him the appropriate pain meds to help him feel better. If it is his lower back, you vet may also prescribe him a stool softener so it is easier for him to have a bowel movement. Your vet will also be able to do X-rays if needed. I do not recommend to give any human pain meds as most of these are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon!

Why is my small dog hunched, in pain, and yelping when jumping?

Symptoms can include a reluctance to move, jump or do stairs. Many walk with a hunched posture and will yelp when being picked up. My 8-year-old chihuahua is yelping and won't jump. What's wrong?

It sounds like Rott may be in pain. He could have a problem with his back or hips. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

I would recommend you consider taking him to your veterinarian so they can check for this. They can then treat accordingly. In the meantime, try to rest him and avoid touching his neck.
