Why is my dog lethargic with a swollen testicle and not playing?

Hello. Swollen testicles with progrssive swelling in the pelvic limb(s) might be an indication of infection, inflammation or even neoplasia. You really should have this evaluated as soon as possible on the chance that he may need to be on antibiotics or need to be neutered. That is abnormal. He could have an infection or mass in the testicle. I recommend neutering him and sending the abnormal testicle for a biopsy to determine the diagnosis. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Cutler isn’t feeling well. Without seeing him it’s very hard to say what’s going on and how to treat him. I do recommend he is seen by a vet to determine what’s going on. Being an older, intact male, I would be worried about something going on in his testicles or prostate. In the meantime, you could try applying a cold compress to his scrotum for 10-15 minutes a few times today to see if that helps with the swelling. After 24 hours, I would switch to a warm compress (not hot). If that doesn’t improve, I would recommend an exam. Good luck and kisses to Cutler!

I would advise that you go ahead and give a dose of the Benedryl and then get him into the vet as soon as possible- tonight with the ER vet is ideal. This could signal an allergic reaction, or a viral/bacterial infection. But I am most worried about something extremely painful such as a testicular torsion (where the testicle twists on itself, cutting of blood flow and causing swelling). If you can’t get to the vet tonight, ice the testicle for 5-10 minutes every 2-64hours to help with pain and swelling. Place a paper towel or thin cloth between the ice pack and his scrotum. Infections in the testicles are not generally expected to result in weight loss unless it is some on-going, low grade, chronic issue that causes the appetite to be decreased for a long period of time. An acute infection will cause a pet to not eat for a few days but this is not expected to cause a significant weight loss. I have learned though, that pet's don't always follow the expected course every single time. A cancer in the testicles will cause swelling of the testicle and will cause weight loss as it progresses and metastasizes. If you are noticing swelling in the testicles and/or weight loss, I recommend to have Bear seen by his veterinarian right away. Weight loss can occur for many reasons - from parasites to cancer to kidney disease. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Swollen testicle can be due to torsion, allergic reaction or infection. i would recommend having it checked by your vet ASAP, if the swelling is too large you will need to take him to the emergencies if your vet is not open today.
