Why is my dog lethargic, not eating, with normal blood tests?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 69.8 lbs

For a week now my dog hasn't had an appetite to eat, barely drinking her water, doesn't want to go on her routine walks, and is sleeping more often. We took her to the vet today where they ran blood test and everything came back normal. Could there be another reason for my dog's changed behavior?

Unfortunately, bloodwork will only tell us part of what is going on internally. Sometimes figuring out what is wrong can require additional testing such as urine samples, x-rays or ultrasounds. You didn't mention Luna's age, but have her listed as unspayed. Depending on when her last heat cycle was, you may want to discus with your veterinarian if she could have been bred or is having a uterine infection. Not eating or drinking is a serious medical problem, so I would strongly recommend contacting your veterinarian for their recommendation on the next diagnostic or treatment steps you can take with Luna to figure out what is going on and how to make her feel better.

The best next steps would be more tests to help get to the bottom of her symptoms. Typically we start with xrays and ultrasound if bloodwork is normal. Mainly looking for any cause as lethargy and weight loss are non specific. If nothing is found on imaging then loss of nutrition via the GI tract is possible and so sometimes additonal testing is needed to assess this. If your family vet is stumped, some pets get referred to see a specialist (a veterinary internist) for additional help in diagnosis. Additionally medications can be tried to help with any nausea/stimulate the appetite but if an underlying cause can be found and treated that will always be better. At this point, if blood testing was normal, he could be dealing with a brain tumor or some other type of cancer. I would recommend diagnostic imaging (x-rays / MRI / ultrasound) and go from there. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Frynse. Is she eating anything at all? For example, will she eat treats or people food, but just not her dog food? In this case, she could be getting picky and holding out for tastier treats. If she is not eating at all though, this is worrisome. She is a small dog and her blood sugar can drop too low of she goes extended periods without food. It is always a good idea to check blood work to ensure there is not an underlying disease causing her change in appetite. I hope this information helps!

Why is my dog not eating for weeks, lethargic, with clear tests?

I am so sorry Chi hasn't been feeling well. If all the tests were clear then I would recommend having an abdominal ultrasound performed. This would look at the architecture of the intestines and stomach and see if there is anything else that could be going on with Chi. She could have pancreatitis, a foreign object, a bad gastrointestinal upset, and much more going on that may or may not show up on the blood work and might not even show up on X-rays. I would also recommend a bland prescription diet to help settle her stomach also. I would have a ultrasonographer or an internal medicine specialist to perform the ultrasound. My dog is lethargic, not eating, and has bloody stool. What to do?

Poor Luna! She could have an infection (parvo, etc) or a parasite. Since she has bloody stool and is lethargic, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can test a stool sample to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat the problem. She might also need some fluids to prevent dehydration. Hope she gets better soon!

It definitely sounds like Lyra is sick, but her symptoms aren’t consistent with any specific disease process. I would recommend taking her back to the vet. Rechecking lab values will be helpful to see if there are any changes, and IV fluids would be helpful to fight inflammation and dehydration. She may need additional diagnostics like x-rays or an ultrasound to see what could be going on internally.

My 10-month puppy is lethargic, in pain, and vet meds aren't working.

I recommend having tests done on Luna such as blood work, a urinalysis, and possibly x-rays. This can help them diagnose what is going on with her. I would take her back into a vet today, poor girl.
