My dog is lethargic, not eating, and falling asleep standing. Why?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 18 lbs

My buddy woke up fine yesterday he ate drank peed and pooped as usual. He had his treats when snack time. All of the sudden like at 8pm we started noticing him slowing down. Didn't want to walk eat play and literally falling asleep standing or sitting. I became concerned and took him to the emergency room. Where the did a thorough check up gave him IV and did blood work which came back great. He was sent home basically with nothing wrong but today he is the same no eating no playing just letharg

I’m sorry Buddy isn’t feeling well. The good news is that his blood work looked good! Sometimes with real nebulous
Symptoms such as what Buddy is displaying it can be difficult to pin point the cause. When he is sleeping standing or sitting it makes me suspect that laying down is uncomfortable. This makes me wonder is his belly or his back is uncomfortable . Young dogs certainly have a reputation for eating things they shouldn’t and an intestinal foreign body would be high on my list of concerns. Also I see a lot of back pain in these types of cases as well. Sometimes serial examinations are helpful because you find things on a repeat examination that maybe wasn’t as evident the day before. If he doesnt seem to improve then I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment soon. An x-Ray of his abdomen may be recommended. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Oh my. Poor guy. He sounds like he really didn’t feel well. There is likely an internal illness or organ malfunction (ie kidneys, liver pancreas) going on. I would highly recommend having Alex seen by your local vet for baseline bloodwork to start. This will look for possible organ malfunction and signs of infection as well. Once we know what the underlying problem is, then we will know what Alex needs to hopefully improve his conditon. He is an older dog so it’s important to get him checked by your vet at the first sign of illness. I hope that Alex feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.

My dog is suddenly lazy, not eating, and sleeping a lot. Is he sick?

Poor Pocholo! It definitely sounds like he isn't feeling well for some reason. Unfortunately, these symptoms are very vague and could be caused by almost any type of illness or injury, so there's no way to say what might be wrong without being able to examine him. I would recommend taking him to the vet for a check-up as soon as you are able to - he/she can do some blood work or other testing if needed to help determine what's wrong and get him started on appropriate treatment for the problem.

Lack of energy can be the sign of many things that go from just being tired to actually representing a problem like due to pain for example. If he is otherwise fine, I recommend you keep a close eye on him for now. Loss of appetite and lethargy can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Dexter evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. My dog is bleeding, lethargic, hasn't eaten for 2 days. What's wrong?

I am so sorry to hear that your dog is so unwell. From what you are describing it sounds possible that he could have ingested a toxin, have a urinary tract infection, an infection of the prepuce, or an issue with his kidneys. Because he is so lethargic and not eating I would suggest a trip to the veterinarian as soon as possible to a diagnosis and appropriate treatment. If you can collect a urine sample to bring in that would be helpful. In the meantime you can try the following at home; Keep up fluids with; Pedialyte flavourless mixed with water 50/50 Low sodium chicken broth Encourage eating; Chicken boneless and cooked Low fat ground beef cooked Best of luck and ask any further questions you have here, we are here to support you. Why is my senior dog not eating, lethargic, and won't stand?

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry that Fido is not feeling well. Dark colored urine is an indication of dehydration. Not eating can be a sign of almost anything. Not eating for that long is very worriesome. You need to get him to a vet for an exam and some treatment. I don't think worms or the heat is the issue. I found a few veterinary hospitals in your area. I suggest you get him to one of them for an exam. Remember, at 10 years of age, he is about 60 years old in "human years".
