My Yorkie vomited, got fluids, now lethargic & drinking a lot. What now?

Depending on your location, there may be confirmed cases of Canine Influenza in your area. This is a potential cause for the cough. The flu will typically present similar to as it does in people, with a fever, cough, lethargy, inappetance, and often a nasal discharge. It has the potential to progress to pneumonia. There is no specific treatment for the flu, only supportive care and antibiotics if secondary pneumonia develops. I use the rule if a cough does not improve, or worsens, over the course of 48 hours, and is accompanied by lethargy, decreased appetite, difficulty breathing, and vomiting or diarrhea, then the pet should be seen. With the recent outbreaks of Canine Influenza I would certainly try to have him seen by his veterinarian.

I am so sorry to hear about your poor yorkie. First, I want to applaud you for allowing the veterinarian to perform diagnostic testing in the form of x-rays and bloodwork. This is a great first step and can provide them with a baseline in case they need to do further testing in the future. Unfortunately, there are still so many diseases or conditions that a dog can get that will not show up on an x-ray or routine bloodwork. For example, gastrointestinal diseases like inflammatory bowel disease do not show up positive with only x-rays and routine bloodwork. Another example is if your dog is In pain for some reason such as a muscle pull or they hurt their back while jumping on the couch, etc. pain can cause a dog to exhibit all of the clinical signs that your dog is showing such as not eating, not drinking, and not playing at all. And pain cannot be diagnosed in x-rays or bloodwork. The point being that there are so many different diseases and ailments that a yorkie can get that just won’t show up with routine testing and may need specialized further testing modalities. My advice is the following: if he is not showing signs of improvement within 24 hours, please take him back to the veterinarian to do further testing or even start IV fluid’s and other supportive treatments. If he is getting better, I would still call the veterinarian and give them an update on the condition to see if they want to recommend anything else you can do to help him at home. This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal or urinary tract diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy and hyperthermia for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic. A check up is needed if lethargy lasts for more than 24hours. Hello, I am sorry to hear about Kingston. If he is very lethargic and vomiting I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian. Small breed puppies can have a hard time regulating their blood sugar and temperature and can get sick quickly. Your veterinarian will likely recommend bloodwork and potential x-rays to help get to the bottom of what is going on. Hope this helps, good luck!

The injection is called Cerenia, if this didn't help then you must take him back to the vet for a blood test and xray/ulrasound, he might be suffering from either a foreign body in the GI tract or severe gastrointestinal infection.

Hello. I am sorry that Daizee isn't feeling well. If she is vomiting and having diarrhoea, and bloodwork and radiographs were normal, this typically means she either has gastritis or pancreatitis. Both of these conditions would result in normal blood and x-rays, but cause the diseases that you are seeing. Often-times these animals need to be in hospital, on IV fluids and stronger pain meds then can be sent home. They often also need multiple medications to protect the gut, and if she is vomiting she can only get these by IV, which means she needs to be in hospital. I would recommend a visit to a 24 hour or emergency clinic if your clinic isn't open, or go back to your vet and discuss if Daizee needs IV fluids and IV medications. Good luck with Daizee!

Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral infections (like parvo), foreign body ingestion (something is stuck and requires surgery to remove), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, ingested something that is upsetting her stomach, food allergies or intolerance. If Charlie is vomiting while being fasted he should be seen today on Emergency. You can with hold water for 4-6 hours and food until monday am. Offer water after 4-6 hours as ice chips and as small amounts. If there is no further vomiting by the morning then offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. Feed as small frequent meals. If Charlie continues to vomit while fasted, after water or food is reintroduced or will not eat he needs to see a Vet.
