My dog had a puppy, now lethargic with brown discharge. Emergency?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Loki! I would have Loki seen on emergency or right at 8 am. I would want to be sure that there is no uterine or mammary gland infection, no retained puppies and that her calcium is normal. Low calcium is serious. If you have the ability to bottle feed the puppies until you can get Loki to the Vet then do that , if you don't then let them nurse. I hope this helps and I wish Loki a speedy recovery!

What a sweet face. I'm so sorry that Nala is sick. You need to get her to a vet ASAP. If she is unable to hold down water and she's very lethargic, a number of serious problems are possible. She may have a viral enteritis (Parvovirus), or an intestinal obstruction from a toy, rock, etc. Many causes are possible but the bottom line is that if she is lethargic and cannot hold down fluids, then at the very least she needs to have some help getting some hydration. Please seek an emergency vet as soon as you can. They can do an exam and see if she is painful in her abdomen, they may recommend a Parvo test, they may recommend blood work to check her electrolytes and blood sugar, and they may recommend X-rays, all depending on what their impressions are from physical exam and the information you give them. (vaccine history, any known toys she's chewed up lately, when did the vomiting start, is she having diarrhea as well, etc etc. ). They can give her fluids either intravenously (IV) or under her skin (sub-Q fluids, also called subcutaneous fluids) and can advise you on the next best steps for Nala. I am sorry I don't have a home solution for you here, but you really need to get her in to your vet ASAP. A lethargic puppy is never normal. (Tired after playing hard, yes. Lethargic, no.) Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nala! The crying is normal for an 8 week old puppy in a new home. The vomiting and diarrhea is not normal and is not anxiety. Possible causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, reaction to new food/treats or a food allergy. Nala is very young and small. Not eating well combined with vomiting and diarrhea predisposes her to dehydration and low blood sugar risks. I highly recommend having her seen today and bring a stool sample. Also bring any paper work indicating recent vaccinations and dewormings. I wish you and Nala the best!

I'm so sorry you have lost some of Tanina's puppies. A dark green discharge can be seen for a couple days after delivery of a litter of puppies normally. My greatest concern is that she may still have some puppies in her uterus and ultimately this could cause a serious infection for Tanina. Since she is otherwise acting very normally, you may safely monitor her until your regular veterinarian can see her tomorrow. An x-ray can be taken very quickly to check for evidence of any remaining puppies in the uterus. If she starts showing signs of straining to pass another puppy, starts vomiting or acting very anxious or unusual, have her examined by a veterinarian right away.

Unfortunately, all the signs you have listed are considered "non-specific" meaning these are common signs associated with many different diseases. The most life-threatening and urgent case would be if a puppy was not delivered and has been dead inside her. This can lead to signs life this followed by shock and death. As such, if you are not sure how many puppies she was carrying (via a previous x-ray), I'd see an emergency vet immediately to confirm that all of them are out. If not, emergency stabilization and/or surgery will be needed. Several other things coming to mind include: mastitis (mammary tissue infection/inflammation), bacterial or viral infection, parasites, intestinal obstruction (if she is known to eat things), and more. Regardless of what the underlying cause it, Sam is losing alot of her body fluid through milk and will quickly become seriously dehydrated if she is not drinking. She needs to see a vet today to make sure she is ok and to re-hydrate her if necessary. Best of luck to you and Sam.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding ICE. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. I worry that nursing the pups has placed a huge toll on her body. If this is the case, eclampsia or low blood calcium can result. This can be very serious and requires prompt care. Her veterinarian will be able to diagnose this with a blood sample. I would have Bella seen by a vet immediately. She could be suffering from a pyometra, which would cause her to be lethargic, shiver from pain, have the brownish discharge, and drink and urinate a lot. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, so she should be seen by a vet now. A UTI or bladder stones are other differentials for her symptoms, but the risk is of a pyometra is high. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays to diagnose what is causing her symptoms so she can be treated. If she does have a pyometra, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Please take her into a vet now.
