What's dog leg plate removal recovery like? Will her leg be okay?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 55 lbs

So my dog broke her leg back in February and needed surgery to put a plate and screws in. She ended up breaking 3 of the screws and when we took her to the vet the other day they said we should get the plate and remaining screws removed because it can cause a lot of problems later on. So I'm wondering roughly how long would recovery time be and what can I expect later on in her life? Will her bad leg be okay without the plate supporting It?

Poor Dakota. She has been through a lot for such a young girl. The plate is necessary to keep the bone stable while it heals. Once the bone has healed, the plate is no longer needed, but we often leave it in place as long as it isn't causing a problem to avoid a second surgery. The recovery after removing the plate and screws will depend on what her x-rays look like right now. Sometimes it is only a couple of weeks and sometimes it is 8-10 weeks. So, follow your vet's recommendation on that. Hopefully this will be Dakota's last surgery and she can get back to her normal self soon! Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Hello. If you follow all instructions from the surgeon & there are no unforeseen complications, then Sophie should have a complete recovery. She will be uncomfortable for awhile, but she is young & young bones heal very quickly. Why is my dog's healed broken leg bending after plate removal?

Hello, and thanks for your question about Furgle. If the fracture occurred 2 years ago, then your vet is right that he should do fine without the plate, since a fracture should completely heal within 2-3 months. If he doesn't seem painful, then I wouldn't be too worried. However, if you feel that there's definitely a change happening in the angle of his leg, then it's worth having your vet take another look. You're also welcome to post a picture and we can offer subjective input on the appearance of the photo. But, this doesn't sound likely to be related to his previous fracture. Hope this helps.

Is it safe for my dog to keep a surgical rod in his leg long-term?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In general, pins and plates can safely be left in the body indefinitely. There is always a small risk of infection, in which case the pin/plate would be removed. The risk of infection will be present life-long but is less than 5%. If you are worried about it, head into the vet for an x-ray and to discuss if it is worth taking out. (A pin that exits near the surface of the skin can sometimes be removed quickly under sedation.) What are the stages of dog recovery after broken leg surgery?

The dog should be kept as quiet as possible for 6-12 weeks to ensure that the bone sets and heals properly. This means no running, jumping, or playing, and the dog should be taken out to toilet on a lead only. Once x-rays are done to confirm that the bone has fully healed, the dog will be allowed to exercise and activity levels must be built back up slowly. Physical therapy and hydrotherapy may be done to help the dog regain it's muscle mass and activity levels.

With strict rest, this may callous further and improve stability but may not be completely aligned as the plate has moved! Regular monitoring with xrays will be required to investigate if healing is progressive or if additional surgery is indeed necessary

Pitbull leg lump after surgery, not bearing weight. Is it normal?

I suspect that lump is related to the plate removal but I do recommend to call your veterinarian. They may want to see her before three days. Sometimes pets don’t realize that the previously broken leg is fixed. Sometimes there is still residual pain. I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian if physical therapy would benefit Kenya. This will help to retrain her brain to use the leg as well as improve the musculature which will make it more stable. I hope this helps and best of luck.

My dog's leg pin causes pain. Should it be removed or stay in?

No, being in more pain now is not normal after that surgery. It may be damaging her joint or hitting nerves that is causing her more pain. I would have her rechecked to see if that can be cut a little shorter and to make sure it has not migrated out a little and slipped. Having the pin removed is an option and it varies upon the dog and healing as to if it is taken out. If it is completely healed and not bothering the dog, then they typically leave them in. If she is healed and doing well, then suddenly seems bothered, then the pin can be safely removed with out compromising the break
