Why is my dog's healed broken leg bending after plate removal?

Poor Dakota. She has been through a lot for such a young girl. The plate is necessary to keep the bone stable while it heals. Once the bone has healed, the plate is no longer needed, but we often leave it in place as long as it isn't causing a problem to avoid a second surgery. The recovery after removing the plate and screws will depend on what her x-rays look like right now. Sometimes it is only a couple of weeks and sometimes it is 8-10 weeks. Joy needs to go back to the vet ASAP. Depending on the type of surgical fix, the pin may need to be removed if it is backing out of the bone. Or it may need to have another surgery to repair the skin.

A 15 year old dog will definitely require some extra healing time, and some extra tender loving care! The fracture must be well aligned, and well stabilized (with a cast, splint, or surgical stabilizer such as a plate or external fixator, depending on the type and location of the fracture) until the fracture is healed. I suspect that lump is related to the plate removal but I do recommend to call your veterinarian. They may want to see her before three days. Sometimes pets don’t realize that the previously broken leg is fixed. Sometimes there is still residual pain. I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian if physical therapy would benefit Kenya.
