My dog's leg muscle feels hard after injury. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | neutered | 65 lbs

My Doberman injured his left back thigh, I think pulled or bruised it. Swelling is coming down but muscle feels hard, this normal? Showing no sign of pain in activity or tuch but still slow using stairs.

Poor Deeter! If he's slow using stairs, then that shows that he is in pain. It's possible that he could have bruised his muscle or pulled something, and it's not normal for it to feel hard. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Unfortunately, if he is not really using it, it does hurt. I would be concerned about a cruciate ligament rupture in a big dog that was playing for a few hours yesterday. My dog fell, leg stiff, X-ray clear. Could it be a soft tissue injury?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Vito. If a fracture has been ruled out by x-rays, then I suspect that he suffered a painful soft tissue injury. He likely has a fair amount of swelling causing the firmness that you feel. I assume that his veterinarian prescribed him pain medication. Keep him very quiet and give the medication as directed. If he was not given any medication, do not give any over-the-counter pain medication as these can be toxic to dogs. Contact your veterinarian for one if it was not provided. If he does have medication, but it does not seem to be strong enough than ask for a secondary one to be added. I hope this information helps!

My dog is sluggish after playing hard. Could he be sore or dehydrated?

Yes, dogs do get sore muscles just like us! It sounds like Auggie might have just overdone it yesterday. If he is eating and drinking normally, and just tired, he is likely just still worn out and sore. If he still seems not himself after 24-48 hours I'd be worried it might be more serious and consider taking him in for a vet visit and potentially some anti-inflammatory pain medication.

My dog is limping after a long run, but shows no pain. What's wrong?

Poor Dexter. I'm glad to hear he isn't painful when you manipulate and palpate his leg. He likely has a soft tissue injury like a sprain. These will usually heal on their own with rest. I would recommend to rest him for a couple of days and if he isn't improved by Monday or Tuesday then I would let your vet do an exam and potentially some X-rays to ensure there is nothing more serious going on. Also, they will be able to prescribe him some pain meds. I do not recommend to give him any human pain meds as these are usually toxic to dogs.
