My dog is limping after a long run, but shows no pain. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 59.5 lbs

Hello, I sit in the situation that I have a Siberian Husky who went out running with us yesterday (over the course of the day, it ended on 42 km) and now he is limping on one leg (he was eagerly running and pulling the leash the entire time). He does not respond negatively when I bend any joints, when I put pressure on the leg, joint or foot (including footpads) but as he is still limping and only ER vets are open, I decided to contact you to see if you had any idea what could be amiss.

Poor Dexter. I'm glad to hear he isn't painful when you manipulate and palpate his leg. He likely has a soft tissue injury like a sprain. These will usually heal on their own with rest. I would recommend to rest him for a couple of days and if he isn't improved by Monday or Tuesday then I would let your vet do an exam and potentially some X-rays to ensure there is nothing more serious going on. Also, they will be able to prescribe him some pain meds. I do not recommend to give him any human pain meds as these are usually toxic to dogs.

I'm sorry to hear Dexter is injured! From what you describe It is definitely possible that he has a broken leg. He could also have a serious injury to his back or pelvis. I'd strongly recommend you take Dexter to see a veterinarian so he can be examined and the source of his pain can be determined. He will likely need prescription pain medications and may need X-rays to diagnose his issues. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to have these prescribed by a veterinarian.

My 8-year-old German Shepherd is limping, but I see no injury. What to do?

He may have a soft tissue injury (like a sprain/strain of a muscle) or an orthopedic issue (hairline fracture, or arthritis). The best recommendation is to restrict his activity for the next 48 hours - no running, no jumping, no stairs, and leash-walks only. If he still limps after that 48 hour trial, Dexter may need to be seen by a veterinarian for a lameness exam.

My dog's back leg limps then he's fine. When should I see a vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Dexter! Since it has been going on for 3 weeks already I think it is time to have him seen by your Vet. Common causes of hing leg lameness are: hip dysplasia, cruciate (ACL tears), Lyme or other tick borne disease, immune polyarthropathy, HOD, panoseitis, or simply a strain or a sprain. If you haven't strictly rested him (leash walks, no running or jumping) for a week you can try that first. But if he is still having problems he should be seen. Izzy may have sprained the leg. I would observe her and see whether it gets worse or better. Should the lameness get worse, have her examined by a veterinarian. Make sure she rests, and only leash walk her for the next few days.
