Dog's leg lump burst open, now it's bloody and deep. Is it serious?

I'm sorry Pogo has this going on. Many things can cause what you describe, but I am suspicious that it might be an infected and now ruptured tumor. This could be benign or malignant, but should be evaluated quickly. Your veterinarian may have to treat the infection before they can diagnose what the lump may be. In the mean time warm compresses may help it drain and make Pogo feel better. Keep him indoors and away from flies or the wound will be full of maggots in a day. Good luck to both of you! This looks like a growth that has broken open but it could also be an injury or abscess. It is not likely to be acutely life threatening but you should have Bella examined by your veterinarian. Do not allow her to lick or chew at the area

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What i am seeing in the pictures is likely a sebaceous cyst that ruptured. These are common with older dogs and are benign. When these rupture there is a chance they will become infected so the best treatment is to have it removed to prevent this from happening. This looks like it could be a cyst or a skin tumor like a hemangioma. I find that once a skin growth ruptures it tends to happen again, so I would definitely recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian. They will probably recommend surgically removing this growth.

It may be bleeding because he's been picking at it. Apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding, then put a bandage on it to protect it. It is very hard to say what the lump is without examining your dog and possibly taking a sample of the lump for pathology. It is possible that the lump is a mammary gland tumour (benign or malignant) but it really does not often happen in such young dogs. All you need to do at the moment is to keep the wound clean and make sure that Aubrey does not lick it. Once your vet is open, you need to take your dog for an appointment.

That looks like it may be a growth or an abscess. At his age, it is best to have your vet check the area and aspirate some cells to see if it is pus for an abscess or cells for a growth. From there, you can tell if medication or surgery is indicated. If it does not bother him and every thing else is normal, then it does not need to be seen as an emergency basis.
