My dog's leg lump is bleeding, smells, and has a hole. What's wrong?

This can be one of two things: 1) a small abscess that has ruptured. 2) a small tumor that did not have enough room to grow and therefore started to ulcerate and finally ruptured. Since it is on a leg and deep, you should have your veterinarian have a look at it, to see whether any vital structures are involved and whether it is a tumor that needs to be removed.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. It may be bleeding because he's been picking at it. Apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding, then put a bandage on it to protect it. Ouch, looks painful! As there is a hole in the lump that appears ruptured it's possible it may be an abscess that has ruptured, or may be a growth in the process of rapidly changing. Since the wound is so large and actively bleeding it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP to have the site looked at, treated and medications such as antibiotics given to help facilitate healing.

It could be an infection, cyst, or possibly a hystiocytoma. The best thing would be to have a vet take a look at the lesion. Your vet can do a needle aspirate to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or it may need to be removed. Hope he feels better soon!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What i am seeing in the pictures is likely a sebaceous cyst that ruptured. These are common with older dogs and are benign. When these rupture there is a chance they will become infected so the best treatment is to have it removed to prevent this from happening. This sounds like Prada may have an infection or abscess on her leg. This needs to be assessed and treated by a veterinarian, who will also prescribe antibiotics and pain medicine if indicated. Please take Prada to a veterinarian ASAP.
