How much does dog leg amputation surgery cost for my mini dachshund?

The second x-ray is a little dark and is difficult to read, but I can certainly see that the area is not normal and why your vet would recommend amputation since the area will not get any better. However, if Ella only has a slightly limp, then I'm not sure why the amputation needs to happen now. Some dogs do very well with an abnormal leg for many years. If at some point it starts causing her more problems, it can always be amputated at that time. And certainly only having 3 legs puts more strain on the other legs, so we try to wait to amputate unless the leg is currently painful or causing problems. Good luck! Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Rocky's ACL injury. The cost for a surgical repair of a torn ACL can range from $1500-$3500, depending on your location and the veterinarian you use. A specialist at a orthopedic practice that has done hundreds of these surgeries will probably be at the higher end of this range, but they will have the most experience. Being that Rocky is a young dog, his chances of recovering well are higher than with some older dogs, so some things will cost less (e.g. the vet may not require an IV catheter). Hello. So sorry to hear that Lily is having this issue. Prices vary widely from veterinary clinic to veterinary clinic. It also depends on if a board-certified surgeon is doing the surgery or not. A board-certified surgeon will increase the price. Did your vet not give you an estimate of cost? I suggest you call a few clinics in your area to get quotes. Playing the odds based on Skylar's breed and the fact that she has a tumor in the leg I would assume it is potentially a primary bone tumor such as osteosarcoma though of course your veterinarian would know better. Regardless of the tumor type, if they already made the determination of amputating her leg as the next step I can tell you that most dogs tolerate being on 3 legs very well and get around just fine even if older. Only dealing with cancer patients myself I have a lot of cancer patients that are three-legged and do great. As long as she does not have another orthopedic or neurologic condition that affects her ambulation, she would likely be ok in three legs. Good luck!

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy! Unfortunately it appears she has a tibial crest avulsion, and the treatment of choice is surgery if you want to have Bailey have the ability to use her leg normally. Unfortunately orthopedic surgeries do cost a great deal of money to perform and so vets have to charge accordingly. You can always see if there is a veterinary school in your area that may offer the surgery at a lower cost, but that isn't always a gaurantee.
