What's the cost of dog mastectomy surgery for mammary tumors?

Unfortunately, this is a difficult situation because most tumors that are cancerous and rupture are not going to heal on their own. A double mastectomy will be a very large and could be difficult recovery time for an 11 year old dog. Also, please know that even with surgery, you may not get another 3 years out of her simply because she is already at the top end of her life span. Also, there is always the risk that the cancer has already spread. Another option you may want to talk to your vet about is whether they can just do a palliative "debulking" of the mass that has ruptured. If there is a way to just resect the one tumor that has ruptured, this potentially could give her a good quality of life without doing a full double mastectomy. With the tumor being ruptured, I am afraid you are being forced to either do a debulking surgery, full mastectomy, or euthanasia. Leaving it alone isn't a good option because it won't likely heal on its own and if it isn't already, it will become infected.

The price of surgery and submitting the masses for biopsy are hospital and regional dependent. I recommend finding a vet for an exam and to obtain an estimate. Where I work (notoriously inexpensive) it would cost about $500-600 to just remove it (guess with out seeing a picture) and the biopsy would be an additional $165 for one mass. I wish you the best.

But to get a more specific estimate, you will likely have to take Dume in for an exam.

Unfortunately mammary tumors are very common in unspayed dogs, and 50% of them are malignant. The prognosis depends on whether or not the tumor is malignant or not, and if it has spread. Given that it's growing, removing it would be best as well as spaying Lilly in my opinion (spaying her prevents her from developing a pyometra). The vet doing the surgery can submit the removed lump to a lab to determine if it's malignant or not, and likely will submit local lymph nodes to see if the cancer has spread there. That should give a prognosis as to life expectancy for her. I'm sorry you are going through this, and in the future, I strongly recommend to not listen to a groomer about veterinary medicine. Radiation is not necessarily invasive, but there are potential side effects. I'm assuming she would be having a definitive radiation treatment protocol due to incomplete margins (cancer cells left behind). With this type of radiation the side effects are dependent on where the radiation will be focused - hair loss and irritated skin are most common but there can be side effects with the mouth and eyes if they are in the field. Later effects can include secondary tumors but these are very rare in dogs and it would be very unusual for Ladybug to develop a new tumor in her lifetime from the radiation. One thing to keep in mind is that dogs do need to be under anesthesia for a short period of time for each radiation treatment. As far as cost goes it is highly variable on your area, but you or your veterinarian should be able to call the facility and get a cost estimate.
