Dog on lactulose: Is this soft poop normal after constipation?

Hello. There is no need to give the Lactulose at this time. If he is not constipated or having difficulty defecating, the Lactulose could give him a very soft stool that might get stuck even more. Do not discontinue the Lactulose without the advice of the prescribing veterinarian. This may lead to constipation again. The dose and/or frequency of Lactulose will likely be adjusted by the veterinarian. In the meantime, a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts may help to resolve the diarrhea. You can discuss the use of veterinary probiotics, such as ProViable, ProStora or FortiFlora, with your veterinarian. These may promote gut health and aid in resolution of mild diarrhea as well.

If your vet prescribed lactulose for him to help with this specific issue, then yes - you could definitely use that according to the instructions you were given, as it often helps to make stool softer and easier to pass. Feeding wet food only might also be helpful, as this can be a good way of increasing the moisture content in the diet and often helps to make hard stools softer.

I am very sorry to hear that Lelani has been so unwell. It sounds as though she is on a great treatment Plan. It can be normal for some constipation to follow a gastrointestinal upset. I would continue to monitor her at home for a few hours. If by the end of the day she still hasn't had a bowel movement, or if she seems in pain or lethargic I Would take her back into the veterinarian. The concern is for a foegein body obstruction. But because she seems happy and active it is less likely.

Yes, I think the stool looks pretty normal considering the history. I would not be overly worried. If you can get a probiotic made for dogs in your area then I would suggest you start using that. It helps to balance the normal bacteria in the intestinal tract. If you can't find one made for dogs then you can use a human product or you can use yogurt - must be plain, no flavor, no sweeteners. I don't see anything overly concerning in the lab results you posted.

After a period of profuse diarrhea, the whole gastrointestinal tract is generally pretty empty. It can take several days for normal stool to form and pass normally. I wouldn’t worry about the little pellets - Lilly’s intestines are still just trying to get back to normal. The pellets mean that her overall stool quality is improving. Constipation rarely occurs right after diarrhea. As long as she isn’t straining while trying to poop, and is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting normally, it sounds as though things are improving. If she hasn’t pooped by Thursday, it’s worth having her rechecked by your vet. I try to give dogs up to 5 days to form normal stool after profuse diarrhea. Hello. In the short term, such as a day or two after worming, the stool can become soft. Nothing to worry about as long as Luna is happy, playful & eating well.
