My dog is whelping. Only one puppy after 3 hours. Should I worry?

My dog is having puppies, but it has been more than 3 hours now and there is only one pup thus far. She is eating/drinking fine - should I be worried?

It is normal for dogs to have puppies between 30 and 45 minutes apart. If your pet is not straining or does not seem to be in pain, then this is less of a worry, however, dogs tend to hide their pain much better than humans. If you know that your dog had more than one puppy, then I would take her to a vet and make sure that there aren't complications. A breached puppy can cause harm to the mother and be life threatening if not addressed.

Some bitches will have 2-3 puppies in 20 minutes and then break for a couple of hours, while others take 2-3 hours per puppy. As long as she is comfortable and not contracting forcefully, monitor closely. If she is contracting forcefully and no puppy is born, call your veterinarian. If it seems too much time has passed or you are worried, call your veterinarian for advice.

Hi and thanks for your post this morning!

During labor, puppies are usually produced every 1/2 hour or so after 5-10 mins of straining. If Isabella has been straining for 1 hour or more and no puppies have been produced, this is a concerning sign which may indicate a stuck puppy and Isabella should be taken to her nearest veterinary hospital. If Isabella is just resting, this is okay. Dogs can sometimes take 1-3 hour rests between delivery puppies. If more than 3 hours pass, however, and no puppy is produced, you may want to take Isabella to her veterinarian to make sure there are no more puppies present to deliver.

I typically recommend heading to the vet if it has been more than four hours between puppies. While it can be perfectly normal to take long breaks in between puppies it’s best to have a vet check for signs of fetal distress if it has been more than four hours, especially since one puppy was already still born. I am sorry to hear about your concern for Leah. We normally do not see more than 4 hours pass between puppies, so it is concerning that she had so much time between the puppies. If you do not know how many puppies to expect (you didn't have an x-ray taken to count puppies) the safest course of action would be to have her vet examine her to be certain there aren't remaining puppies that need to be removed. My dog stopped pushing after 4 pups. When should I call the vet?

It can be up to 4 hours in between puppies. They need the break so they do not get exhausted. If she is heavily contacting and trying hard to push a pup out with no luck after 39 minutes then she needs medical attention. If there is a black or brown discharge then she needs medical help. The best thing to do is put her in a quiet dim place to let her rest and have the puppies. Check on her about every 30 minutes. She is unlikely to eat or drink during this hit offer her some just in case.

Typically the membranes pass within 15 minutes of a puppy's delivery, but I would not be overly concerned about the second pup's slower membrane expulsion. Puppies are usually born every 30-60 minutes, but there can be up to 3 hours between puppies, which is all normal. Be sure that Maggie is cleaning and stimulating the puppies to breathe very shortly after birth. If she is not doing this, you can use a clean towel to remove the membranous covering from the puppies' faces and rub their bodies to stimulate them to take a breath. If she is still showing signs of distress or labor, I would take her in to your vet. Your vet will be able to determine if there are any additional puppies. Your vet will be able to give some meds to help with labor or do a C-section on her to get the rest of the puppies out. I hope this helps and the rest of the puppies and mama is okay!
