My dog is in labor, puppy stuck, can't afford vet. What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | unspayed | 5 lbs

Adopted dog last week, turns out she was pregnant but records say she was fixed. Went into labor today and pup got stuck. husband tried to pull puppy out, majorly stuck. Dog bit and ran off. When we found her she was biting at the puppy and pulled off the body but no head. Now worried pup head might still be stuck inside. Fed cottage cheese to increase calcium and she had some contractions and whined, but nothing produced. Had bowl movement still no pup. Help first dog ever, can not afford vet

Poor Roxy! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. Unfortunately, I'm afraid she does need to see a veterinarian, since from your description it sounds like she is likely going to need an emergency C-section to remove the remaining puppies and/or fetal parts still inside. This is not something that can be treated at home, and she may very well die without immediate veterinary care. So I would focus on finding a way to get her in to see a veterinarian as soon as possible.

If costs are a concern, you can see if there is a low-cost SPCA clinic in your area that could help. You may also try calling your local animal shelter to ask if they have any programs to assist low-income pet owners with veterinary emergencies. Finally, you could also apply online for Care Credit, which is a payment plan accepted by most veterinary clinics: www.carecredit.com

I would recommend getting her to a vet now for an x-ray to count the number of puppies still remaining. My dog's labor stalled: no puppies in hours, bleeding, throwing up.

I am very worried about Bebe. If she hasn't had any puppies for 6 hours, but still has puppies inside, I would definitely recommend to take her to a veterinarian. Sometimes a puppy can be stuck in the birth canal or the mom gets so tired from pushing that her uterus is no longer able to contract to push the puppies out. Both of these situations are dangerous for the puppies and Bebe. The veterinarian will examine her to see if there is a puppy stuck in the birth canal and will most likely recommend taking and x-ray to see how many puppies she still has inside. Depending on what they find, they may recommend doing a c-section. In most cases, this is the only way to try and save the mother and the puppies. I am so sorry. I know this is a very scary situation.

My dog ate her puppies during labor and is still pregnant. Help!

If there are more puppies and no progression of labor at this point then she needs to be seen by a vet. They have medication to give her to stimulate further contractions to continue the process. They can also X-ray her to see how many are there or do a c section if needed Since she didn’t take care of the precious puppies it is best to not let her have any puppies and bottle raise them yourself then get her spayed

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I am so sorry that you are going through this! You are correct, Belle needs immediate Veterinary care. A lot of bully and smoosh faced breeds require C-sections. There should be an Emergency room open. I worked emergency for 9 years and was required to drive in despite hurricanes, blizzards and ice storms. I would find someone with 4 wheel drive or go slowly. I tired to do a quick google search based on your zip code, I hope one is close.
