Dog in labor: Puppy born, then sac. Is this normal? How long until next?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | unspayed | 12 lbs

My dachshund is in labor. She had one pup and a dark sac came out then nothing. The pup came about 2 hours ago and the sac came about 15 minutes ago. Is this normal. This is her first liter. She is 5 years old.

Typically the membranes pass within 15 minutes of a puppy's delivery, but I would not be overly concerned about the second pup's slower membrane expulsion. Puppies are usually born every 30-60 minutes, but there can be up to 3 hours between puppies, which is all normal. Be sure that Maggie is cleaning and stimulating the puppies to breathe very shortly after birth. If she is not doing this, you can use a clean towel to remove the membranous covering from the puppies' faces and rub their bodies to stimulate them to take a breath.

It can definitely be normal for the sac to come out some time after the puppy, so this in itself is not usually any cause for concern :) But, you do need to keep an eye on the amount of time that elapses between puppies. In most cases, once active labor starts, you can expect to see a puppy born every 30-60 minutes if things are going well. But, up to three hours between puppies can be normal. Since it sounds like Maggie's last puppy was born about two hours ago, I would monitor her closely for the next hour or so.

If she still appears be in labor, with visible abdominal contractions, panting, etc. without producing another puppy in the next hour, then I would recommend taking her to an emergency vet for an exam to see what the problem is, as she may need an emergency c-section.

No, foetal sacks without a puppy is not normal and is an emergency as the pups oxygen and blood supply is likely disrupted, putting the pup at risk. Please have her assessed by an emergency vet to determine if a c section is required.

Dog delivered a dead puppy late. Is my mother dog healthy after birth?

It isn't unusual for a dead puppy to be born long after a healthy litter is born. It is likely that the puppy was stuck in the birth canal and took longer to deliver and died while being stuck, or it could have been dead in utero and was later expelled with the last placenta. Usually there is no problem with the mother provided she eats, drinks and takes care of her puppies. If she gets lethargic, or if she has smelly discharge from the vulva (greenish non-smelly discharge is normal) then she should be seen by a vet .

My dog has had contractions for 2 days. Is this normal or emergency?

Hello, sorry to hear about Maggie. 2 days of contractions is a lot and Maggie is likely to be very tired from this. Therefore, I would recommend having Maggie evaluated by her veterinarian rule out any primary causes for her abnormal delivery and contractions. Hello, congratulations on your coming pups. You should check her once every hour or so. If she is going into labor, then you will see active abdominal contractions, and the puppies should be born within 2 hours. If 2 hours of contractions have passed, then contact your emergency veterinarian to discuss with them if you should bring her in to be evaluated. Otherwise, make sure she has a warm area that she can easily access to have her puppies. Once the puppies are born, you can help her clean the puppies and make sure they can all nurse. It can be anywhere from hours to days, but this is a sign that labor will be soon, so it's best to have everything ready that Luna needs, such as a whelping box, supplies to care for any rejected puppies, and your vet or an emergency clinic's number on-hand in case anything goes wrong. If you know how many puppies you'll be expecting, you can also use that to gauge how well labor is going for her (she should have a puppy within a few hours of each previous once labor starts). Other signs of labor include body temperature changes, changes in eating/drinking/bowel habits, and visible contractions along the abdomen.

If she is still showing signs of distress or labor, I would take her in to your vet. Your vet will be able to determine if there are any additional puppies. Your vet will be able to give some meds to help with labor or do a C-section on her to get the rest of the puppies out. I hope this helps and the rest of the puppies and mama is okay!
