Is my dog's pacing, crying, and vulva normal while she's in labor?

A good rule of thumb is that if you are seeing black or green discharge, then that is considered abnormal and she should be seen by your vet right away. Her whining sounds a little concerning as well, especially if she is doing it continuously and seems to be in distress. A vet visit sounds like a good option for her @ this point. It is normal for the ligaments around her pelvis to become stretched in preparation for labor and also for the pups to drop down under her belly rather than stretching her belly wider it should become deeper. Any restlessness, fever or discharge should be checked by your vet

If you are sure she was bred and is pregnant, being in stage 2 labor for 8 hours is serious for Abby and her puppies. If you aren't sure she is pregnant she could have an infected uterus (pyometra) and the discharge is puss. A pyometra is a surgical emergency. I recommend that you take Abby to an emergency clinic right away to have her evaluated. I wish you the best of luck!

The vulva is swollen indeed but it may be normal for Francis. To be on the safe side, apart from abdominal scan I would suggest digital examnation of the vulva to make sure that there is notthing abnormal going on (for example partial vaginal prolapse). I don't think the swelling itself, providing that the birth canal is fully open and not obstructed during the labour, will cause any problems for Francis.

That can last up to 18 hours, so keep monitoring her. If 18 hours pass and she has not progressed to the second stage of labor (contractions and giving birth), get her into a vet immediately. 56 days is a bit early, but it is possible she could be in labor, or closer to her due date than thought. Signs of labor can include visible contractions, changes in body temperature, lack of appetite, and waxing of the nipples (producing a milk substance). I would keep an eye on her, and if she doesn't have any puppies within a few hours of signs of labor, or she seems in great distress/is extremely exhausted take her into your vet ASAP for care to make sure there isn't a stuck puppy or other illness or complication causing her early symptoms.
