Is my pregnant dog's panting, low temp, and pacing normal for labor?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 10 lbs

My pomeranian is at 63 days gestation, her temp is 97.7. She is panting and pacing. She is so much smaller than her first litter of 4 pups, 18 mos ago, her tits do not appear to be very full. She still has an appetite is this normal? Monitoring her closely.

Yes, this is normal and it sounds like Roxy could be heading into the first stages of labor if she is panting and pacing. Continue to monitor her closely, and if 24 hours pass after this temperature drop, have her seen by a vet right away. Best of luck.

It does sound like Gracie Lou may be in labor if she is panting and pacing a lot. Typically a dog's normal gestation length is 58-68 days, so 54 days is a little early to be going into labor, but predicting the actual due date can be difficult. I recommend taking her temperature rectally. A dog's normal temperature is 101-102.5F. Once it drops below 100F, she will give birth to her puppies within 24 hours. Should 24 hours pass with no sign of puppies, Gracie Lou will need to see a vet immediately.

Yes she can. The average gestation period is 58-72 days, so she is only 1 day early if she goes into labor tonight. Just continue to monitor her and the puppies for any complications. It sounds like she might be showing signs of early labor, but it also could be normal behavior for the end of pregnancy. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for an exam and an x-ray if you haven't already seen them recently - it is very helpful to take an x-ray to count puppies late in pregnancy. That way you know approximately how many puppies to expect. You should also start checking her rectal temperature with a well lubricated digital thermometer three times a day to establish a baseline (make sure it's at the same time every day) - usually a dog's baseline temperature will drop by one full degree prior to labor. If Luna's temperature drops but you don't see puppies within 24 hours you should see a veterinarian to make sure everything is okay.

It sounds like puppies should come soon - I'm guessing that the temperature of 98.4 is a drop from her baseline temperature which means that puppies should come in the next 24 hours. If she is having contractions you should see a puppy within four hours, and if she is actively pushing a puppy should come in 30 minutes. If not, you should contact a veterinarian right away. A pregnant dog's temperature will often dip down up to 48 hours before going into labor. It usually drops to 98-99, then will go back up to normal (100-102). I would watch Tobie for any other signs of labor. If she hasn't had any puppies in 48 hours, it may be best to have her examined by the vet.
