How to ensure a bird's safety with dogs and cats in your home?

I am sorry your friend is in this difficult situation. The kitchen is not a good place to house a bird because birds are very sensitive to cooking fumes and cooking with Teflon near a bird an be deadly for the bird. Cats and birds can potentially co-exist, though their presence can cause both of them to be more likely to act aggressively. It may be possible for your friend to keep the bird, but some planning, adjusting, and training may be needed. That's a lot of questions! When getting a new bird, it is best to keep them in a separate cage for a few weeks (quarantine) to make sure they do not spread any illness to each other. Once the new bird checks out safe, you can keep them near each other to get used to hearing/seeing each other, and then gradually introduce them, whether on a shared play pen, or in a cage that is large enough to comfortably house both. Make sure you have extra food and water dishes, toys, perches, etc so that they cannot fight over these resources or become territorial. Each bird will have different markings depending on the type of coloration the bird is (there are different varieties of markings) so this will greatly depend on if you purchase a bird with similar markings or not.

It won't make your cat forget about them, thats for sure. However, a different cage may be more protective for the birds. Ideally, you might consider keeping the birds cage in a room that is closed off to the cat. This will keep the cat away from them entirely. The constant stalking that the cat may be doing to the birds could stress them out significantly and also may frustrate your cat. Sorry I don't have an easy solution for you here. Best of luck! Great question! Introducing them should be done slowly. When you first bring Mousewhisker (I love his name!) home, I would keep them in rooms separated by a door. This way, they can get used to the smells and sounds of each other without contact. Make sure your cat has a litter box, food, and water in their room. You can also place a blanket with the dogs's smell in the cat's room, and a blanket with the cat's smell in the dogs's room. I would also consider get a Feliway for your cat and a DAP for your dogs. These are pheromone diffusers that help with anxiety and should also help ease the transition. Once all the pets seem relaxed with the current situation, swap rooms placing the cat in the dogs's room and vice versa. You can do this switch several times over the course of the introductions. Once they are all comfortable with the smells of each other, it's time for them to meet face to face. I would introduce the dogs on a leash to the cat while he is in a cat carrier or on the other side of a baby gate. Reward the puppy for being calm and quiet near the cat. Once they seem comfortable with each other, the baby gate can be taken away. Make sure your cat has a cat tree where he can escape from the dogs as needed, and don't allow the dogs to chase the cat. I would recommend you continue to try this because most of the time, it just takes time for them to get better and trust you more. The secret recipe really is patience and being consistent. I think it would be best if they are introduced slowly to the puppy meaning for short amounts of time to be increased daily until they are getting along well consistently. They should be supervised at the beginning when interacting with your cats or puppy. I think it would be a good idea to have toys and beds for both to make them feel more at home. Good luck!
