My dog has kidney stones. How to make him comfortable before vet?

Urinary stones are concerning because at any point one of the stones can cause a complete blockage of the urethra (tube you pee out of), and can block any flow of urine and this can lead to life-threatening kidney disease and death because the potassium cannot be peed out. Therefore, firstly, it is very important to make sure that Cointhee is able to pee out urine at all times, and isn't trying to pee with nothing coming out. If this is occurring please get him to a vet right away. Blood in the urine can be caused by the stones/crystals causing irritation, and can also be caused by infection that sometimes goes along with the stones. Repeated trauma to the urethra can cause strictures, and long term complications. I would discuss with your vet about taking some x-rays to see how many stones are present, and discuss if surgery is an option to remove the stones. I would also discuss about checking to see if an infection is present. Usual treatment for bladder stones includes antiboitics if infection is present, special food to try to dissolve the small crystals and tiny stones, and surgery to remove the big stones. Hello again. It really depends on what type of stones are present, such as are they oxylate or struvite? Some stones are harder to manage with diet than others, & of course, it also depends on what is available in your country. Your veterinarian is the best individual to help with this unless you have some laboratory data that indicates what is going on. Hills & Royal Canin Prescription Diets are very popular here. You can definitely add a little plain white rice, but not so much as to dilute the diets, & please do not add any supplements unless directed to do so by your veterinarian. Poor Wormie! It's quite serious that he's bleeding from his penis and a stone came out. That means he has bladder stones, and his urethra could become blocked from them. It's best that he is seen by a vet immediately to prevent that from happening, as a blocked urethras is medical emergency and is fatal if not treated. It is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to prescribe any medications, as we have to see an animal in person first in order to do so. In addition, there aren't any safe human pain medications you can give him. Many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Wormie should see a vet now.

Bloat with a gastric torsion would be rare in a small dog, like a Maltese. If he is still having problems then you should call your vet and have him rechecked. If he is having trouble moving around then your vet can check his back and neck and make sure he isn't having an issue with his spine. Your vet may need to run some blood-work to help diagnose the problem and/or repeat x-rays. He may need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications to make him more comfortable. Cysteine stones are uncommon and their presences means there's something wrong with the way his body is metabolizing food, or, more like in this case, that his diet was very unbalanced. It takes a lot of work and expensive supplements to may a home cooked diet safe, so there's a good change that was the problem. If you don't feel comfortable with your vet's recommendations, I think it would be good to get a second in-person opinion because it's important to work with a vet that you trust.

If your vet gave you medicine to give to Buddy you should give it until the meduicine is gone according to the instructions on the label. You can feed Buddy a diet for dogs with kidney disease( such as Hill's k/d available from your vet, for a few weeks which will help his kidneys recuperate, but usually it is not necessary. Feed him normally this weekend and make sure he drinks water and give your vet a call on Monday asking whether there are special instructions.
