My dog has kidney/liver issues. Can she eat bananas and other fruits?

Choose vegetables low in phosphorus such as sweet potato, pumpkin and squash. Carrots, green beans and peas can also be used. Apple (no seeds), sliced peaches, pineapple, pear and mango can all be used, but in moderation since too much may lead to stomach upset.

Ho, I personally think the liver diet would be the best option. I don’t think the kidney diet will do any harm but it is not the best option. Hill’s L/D has high levels of l-carnicine and l-arginine that are important for the metabolism. You should also see an improvement in the liver condition thanks to Adenosyl supplementation. Talk to your vet about trying different brands that have prescription kidney diet. But if it is him not eat anything or eat a normal, good quality dog food, it is more important that he eat something. As for treats, focus on low sodium, low protein treats. Dog biscuits are ok, and veggies and fruits that are safe for dogs. Stay away from meaty dog treats or jerky.

Banana is fine to give Buddy as an occasional treat, but I would not give it to him daily. It's most important that his diet consists of a puppy formulated food so he grows properly. You can give your dog apple slices, banana, blueberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, mango, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon. Kiwi fruit is ok, but remove the skin as it can be an irritant. Make sure you either peel or wash the fruits before giving them as a snack or a treat.

Here are some you want to avoid: Avocado Onion Garlic Chives Apple cores and seeds (apple slices are ok) The green parts of a tomato (red parts are ok) Cherries (seeds, leaves, and stems are toxic) Apricots (seeds, leaves, and stems are toxic) Grapes and raisins Wild mushrooms (grocery store mushrooms are ok) Currants Green potatoes (cooked, ripe potatoes are ok) Rhubarb I find that many dogs like baby carrots, green beans, and peeled apple slices. Yes those are good. Never give grapes or raisins as they can cause kidney damage and death. Onions aren’t good or large amounts of garlic. I feed plain canned pumpkin which fills them up and increases the fiber in the diet to keep them regular. In addition please feed a good quality dog food so she gets the nutrients she needs.
