My dog has kidney failure. Can she still take Incurin and Proin?

I would recommend ensuring that Isla has completely cleared the UTI as incontinence can also be indicative of a residual UTI. If the infection has been cleared fully, I would recommend discussing the use of Proin with your veterinarian. I'm sorry to hear that Bijou has developed some leaking. Unfortunately we do see that in a number of spayed females. Proin is one of the most common medications that we will use for urinary incontinence, but there are several others that you can try as well. That is not a common side effect of the medication. I do recommend a veterinary exam and lab tests to determine if she has a urinary infection, kidney problem or even diabetes or other metabolic problem that can change the amount of drinking and urination. Once they get a reason then they can start treatment that could consist of a diet change and/or other medications. You are correct, Proin and DES are both medications that are commonly used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. However, its possible that urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder tumors could also cause these symptoms. Therefore, a visit to your vet for at least a urinalysis (urine test) is indicated. If no cause is found, then medication such as DES or Proin can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Antihistamines will have a significant effect on urination in dogs. As Belle is a fairly large dog incontinence after spaying is a relatively common occurrence, Most dogs become incontinent when a little older, but it can indeed happen to younger dogs as well. This is due to a lack of female hormones which used to be produced by the ovaries, Belle will likely need to take the Incurin for a longer period of time if not life-long.

Proin starts to be toxic at about 15mg/kg. Kobi ingested just over 6.8mg/kg and at that dose the most common side effects are mild hypertension (high blood pressure) and bradycardia (slow heart rate). Of course, every dog is different. I suggest you have Koji examined by your veterinarian especially if you are noticing any abnormal behavior. Other adverse effects can potentially be seen even at therapeutic doses. They include restlessness, urine retention, anorexia (not wanting to eat), tachycardia (increased heart rate), and hypertension (high blood pressure). Stroke-like signs have been reported rarely. Other rare clinical manifestations of toxicosis may include piloerection (hairs standing up on end), vomiting, tachypnea (fast breathing), anxiety or agitation, hyperthermia (increased body temperature), tachycardia, tremors, and potential seizures.
